This is the first in a new series. Its a prequel series that takes place a couple thousand years before Riyria.
If you have read Riyria you will catch references to stuff that plays a roll in that series, but it isn't anything that will hurt to miss.

Will reading this series first ruin that one if I choose to eventually read that one?
Not at all, Diana. I read this and Age of Swords before picking up the Riyria books. Like Sarah said, you will recognize certain things, but not anything that would ruin or spoil the book for you. It works both ways. If you had read Riyria going into this, you would see how things started. If you read this first, then when reading those you see where things came from.
They are so good! Can't wait to reread this one.
Just pulled my copy off the shelf and will be beginning shortly. I will probably be going slow with this (as usual) because I'm reading too many things, but I'm really excited to get back into it! I loved it the first time and hope I love it just as much now.
Just read the first three chapters. I still believe this is a very solid start. No time wasted to set things up, they just start happening. (view spoiler)
I only got a few chapters in but I'm loving it so far. I've had this book sitting on my shelf forever and a half and am so mad at myself for waiting so long to start it.
I have a hold for this book at the library. I'm hoping to pick it up today. Had a snow blizzard this weekend and I wasn't leaving this house lol to pick up the book lol.

I had been meaning to read Sullivan for ages and just never got around to it.

I'm happy I was (so far) wrong.
I don't know that I really had any expectations. I had seen that a lot of people I knew liked his stuff, but just kept pushing it aside. Now he is one of my top favorite authors and Royce Melborn (from Riyria) is one of my favorite characters of all time.
I just finished chapter five. I'm picking up on some interesting little details this time around. (view spoiler)
I have nothing constructive to say but I'm about half way and I want to gush about how much I'm loving this book. Since page 1, which is so rare for me. Usually I need to slog through a lot of world building and character growth before I get sucked in but I haven't been able to put this book down. If I was listening on audio or even reading on kindle I'd be done already. I'm reading a physical copy and it's affecting where I can take it with me, which sucks. But, to summarize, loving this book. Can't wait to read more from the author.

I'm still reading. Anyone else? I've just been really slow with a crazy work schedule. I'm through chapter ten. (view spoiler)

About your chapter 10 spoilers: (view spoiler)
I'm gonna join this tonight, once I finish Nightlife... I've been doing Buddy Reads so long that this 4 day lull before May 1st has me at loose ends, unless I want to jump ahead...
I was considering reading this back when it started, but I was overbooked at the time...

Only other MJS I've read was Hollow World back in February, and I wasn't very impressed once it got preachy... liking this better, and planning to read Riyria in May...

Iain wrote: "Foreword: How fast of a writer is MJS?... to have written the whole series before publication... "MJS is quite a fast writer. His approach to publication seems to be the same as Mark Lawrence (who wrote the entire Book of the Ancestor trilogy before even publishing Red Sister).
I think it also comes from the fact that he wrote then entire Riyria Revelations before publishing book 1 (since he didn't really intend to publish those to begin with. We can thank his wife Robin for that :p) So when the remaining 5 books were being published, he was already working on the Legends of the First Empire.
From what I read here and there, he's working on the finishing touches on books 3-6 of Legends AND writing his next series, which will take place between Legends and Riyria.
I know writers get more done when they are working on multiple projects... lets them take breaks from one series and work on another... most of my favorite speed writers do that... sounds like he's doing that within the same universe now from what you said...
I've read all of his published books and Hollow World is the only one I didn't really like. He does write quickly and writes the whole series (except Riyria Chronicles, which he writes as he goes).
I'm near 50% now, too... liking all the main characters... love Suri... I'm starting to wonder who Brin is from the epigraphs... (view spoiler)

Yea... I'm audio too and terrible with names sometimes... I noticed my mistake shortly after I wrote that...
