I thought the world building and character development in the novel was really good. we get a little glimpse into his life and the world he lives in every other chapter. we were also given a glimpse of the original creators and their lives and motivation and though this book was huge i never skipped pages or skimmed them i read every word. So anyway loved it. Final thought!!!
And Laura I'll be on here for when you read the book and happy to chat once you get it from the library!

OMG!!! Still. Well I would have lent you mine but i doubt you live near by :(
Still here though so when you start reading we can still talk to you about it :)

Going to be my first time reading this! After I've been told several times that I should read it :-)

Exciting! Looking forward to hearing what you think of it.

I'm going to start a day or two late as I'm finishing up another book first, but then I'll jump into this one.

Me too

I'll be ready to discuss whenever people have thoughts.

For me, not my usual read. I like the 80’s references.
Of course!! The more people to chat to about this, the better!
A few of us are just running a little late with starting the book :-)

It's one of the parts I'm looking forward to, trying to see if I can spot them all when they aren't quite so obvious. I've been told repeatedly that I would probably love the book, and it still took me years to finally pick it up.
I'm hoping to finish my current read today so I can jump into this one tomorrow - while reading another BR as well.

So glad I finally picked it up. Even though I have never being gamer myself, I enjoy the challenge, virtual reality and of course the 80's references. My happy teenage years!
I don't pick up that much references to the movies, comics and tv-series, they are not familiar to me as I grew up in former Soviet Union but I enjoy the music references.

OMG Sunshine! I can’t believe you still have that. My husband and you are from the same species when it comes to saving that stuff...I must confess he was right though about keeping the turn table.
I’m @ Chapter 7...I think Cline is a genius with this book!
When he writes about Halliday I’m thinking of a cross between Steve Jobs and Bill Gates.
When I was a kid it was space invaders and Pac-Man. I remember playing pong at the skating rink though.
I sure wish we would have had the insight to save some of those games...we were 4 kids in our household and by the time the fourth got their hands on it...toys were practically dust.

Interestingly I didn't get most of the references because I am 21 and I'm not an 80's buff but I still thoroughly enjoyed the book.
I'm interested to see what other think!

I was 21 in the 80s...when I started reading this I never dreamed this would be a book...gaming theme...that I could relate to.

I didn't get the 80s references too but I do play games back in college so I am enjoying it so far. I had a bit of a personal issue with something mentioned in the first few chapters and almost didn't continue.

It was good. I was also getting Steve Jobs and Bill Gates vibes regarding Halliday.
In my opinion it was so fun to read because in virtual reality everything was possible - fun travel, magic abilities, any kind of weapons and so on. There really wasn't nothing restraining authors imagination.
Wasn't a perfect 5 stars because (view spoiler)

Spoilers are evil! Don't touch! Read the book :) It's fun.

I get a lot of references, but not the gaming. I think there is something for everyone
I’m at chapter 26

I go back and click once I’ve read the chapter referenced so I don’t spoil...it is tempting!

Very interesting! the same kind of thing happens here in Australia too sometimes. Or we just get it years later... so in the 90's :P

I believe playing these games really forces him and most important enables him to be crafty...it's what it takes to play this game. It's really brilliant! Hard to put down.
