^damn you and your practicality

@Yanique- dang girl, you got it going on!

message 58: by J.J. (new)

J.J. What if this island turns out to be Lord of the Flies? I would want to be on Yanique side. Create a tribe and call ourselves Hunters & Gatherers. Yeah I know, original. lol

message 59: by Yanique, Thread Master (new)

Yanique Gillana | 2881 comments Mod
Iโ€™m trying to make my value known so I donโ€™t get voted off the island if it comes to that!

And if we end up with a Lord of the Flies situation I donโ€™t want anyone to mess with me I am armed with degrees in Virology and chemistry.... just saying ๐Ÿ˜‚ always be prepared for the apocalypse, thatโ€™s what my books have taught me.

To an agent by September 2018, published late 2019. You heard it first. ;)

Is it self promotion if it's hypothetical? lol

message 64: by Silvana (new)

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 1971 comments Harry Potter: comfort read, nostalgic factor
Discworld: to make me laugh
The Expanse: I still need some SF to keep me entertained

I realize I never answered the original prompt! So here would be my contribution to our Isle Of The Books:

A Time Odessy - Arthur C. Clarke & Steven Baxter
Time's Eye (A Time Odyssey, #1) by Arthur C. Clarke Sunstorm (A Time Odyssey, #2) by Arthur C. Clarke Firstborn (A Time Odyssey, #3) by Arthur C. Clarke
Revelation Space - Alastair Reynolds
Revelation Space (Revelation Space, #1) by Alastair Reynolds Redemption Ark by Alastair Reynolds Absolution Gap by Alastair Reynolds
The Dark Tower - Stephen King
The Gunslinger (The Dark Tower, #1) by Stephen King The Drawing of the Three (The Dark Tower, #2) by Stephen King The Waste Lands (The Dark Tower, #3) by Stephen King Wizard and Glass (The Dark Tower, #4) by Stephen King Wolves of the Calla (The Dark Tower, #5) by Stephen King Song of Susannah (The Dark Tower, #6) by Stephen King The Dark Tower (The Dark Tower, #7) by Stephen King

I think I can get away with a technicality that other people used and add these as part of the dark tower universe:
The Wind Through the Keyhole (The Dark Tower, #8) by Stephen King The Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King The Stand by Stephen King 'Salem's Lot by Stephen King Insomnia by Stephen King Hearts in Atlantis by Stephen King

I would take.

1. Malazan
2. Game of Thrones
3. Anything by Sharon Kay Penman.

message 68: by Mayim (new)

Mayim de Vries | 2948 comments 1. Lord of the Rings (I can't believe I am the first one to mention LOTR!!!)
2. Malazan.

These two are certain. And then I'd be torn between Harry Potter and Robin Hobb (which series, that is the question though, maybe Liveships) and Red Rising and I don't know what else.

message 69: by Solseit (new)

Solseit | 1516 comments For me, definitely
1. Malazan,
2. Powder Mage

and I am torn for number 3 (Harry Potter, Stormlight Archive, LOTR, and other "boring", typical fantasy choices), probably I would end up with a manga
3. One Piece

I still want my honorable mention for being the one to think up the group reading ๐Ÿ˜„

message 71: by Ahdam (new)

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments I would probably take the biggest series with me

Malazen so I can finally read it

Memory sorrow and thorn

Storm light archive

message 72: by Mayim (new)

Mayim de Vries | 2948 comments Malazan seems to be a definite winner here. :D

I don't quite have a list at the moment, but if I was going to choose, I'd pick long series that would last me awhile... In Death has 45 books and counting... Malazan has 26... these Kurtherian Gambit books Choko has me trying are 126 books and counting... not the same as picking shorter favorites...

message 74: by Mel (new)

Mel | 2360 comments Ooh! FBR Island! I'm down for this. Everyone with their own cave or treehouse or book igloo of solitude, but then we can gather on beach blankets for communal read-a-thons. Booktopia.

Hm, we already have Cosmere, Malazan, Discworld, Harry Potter, LOTR, and WoT covered...

I'm bringing in more of the childhood nostalgia
L'Engle's Time Quartet
Pullman's His Dark Materials
Nix's Abhorsen series

Assuming we're deserted there long enough, we'll need plenty to read to the kids. :P

message 76: by Hacen (new)

Hacen | 883 comments Harry Potter
Realm of the Elderlinga
A Song of Ice and Fire

We should have done this as a poll to see what the top series to take are

Song of Ice and Fire would be a decent choice. A good chance to get caught up. And you'd probably be rescued in time for the next book ;)

It also brings the fun-factor, whereas I was focused mostly on longevity. :)

message 87: by Micah (new)

Micah (mlanders) | 16 comments I went for diversity of mood.

I mean, at the end of a long day of setting your own broken bones, wreckage salvaging, bamboo hut building, and SOS bonfire burning, you just want to kick back in the sand with your feet up and drink those few drops of rain water you've managed to collect with a lighter read in hand. Calvin And Hobbes anyone? Can we get some of those little paper umbrellas to put in these coconuts?

message 88: by Emelia (new)

Emelia | 105 comments Well this is easy ! lol

The Dragon's Path series
Sword in the Storm the Rigante series
Waylander the Drenai series

I am a huge Gemmell fan and if have not read any of his books may I suggest these series ! His books are stand alone as well, so another plus.
The Rigante series is about Celts so is my personal fave ;)

You and Margret should get a hut (on the island). ;) (she loves lord of the silver bow by gemmell)

message 91: by Sarah (last edited Feb 23, 2018 12:02PM) (new)

Sarah | 494 comments This deserted island sounds like fun!
I'll add a little variety to the mix too.

1. Hmmm, if you can go "Cosmere" for Sanderson, can we do the same thing with Michael J. Sullivan and count everything set in Elan? Because I need Hadrian & Royce along if I'm going to be on a deserted island but I like the people from Legends of the First Empire too and wouldn't mind them coming along.

2. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. These make me laugh and are highly entertaining.

3. The Brother Cadfael Chronicles by Ellis Peters. They are medieval mysteries, usually murder, very well written- also, there are 21 books in the series.

message 92: by Niki Hawkes, I made it past GOTM... barely (new)

I'm bringing all Elderling by Hobb, so the entire cosmere totally counts.

Your choices have me adding books to my "To-Read" list left and right. I think I need to start these Brother Cadfael mysteries post haste.

Should I apologize for adding to your TBR? Oops.

The Cadfael series is really good! The main character, Brother Cadfael, is a Crusader turned Benedictine Monk of the abbey at Shrewsbury in Shropshire, England (right along the Welsh border). He wasn't real, but a number of other characters from the series were so that is an additional layer of cool. The books are very well written and well researched. Ellis Peters (her real name was Edith Pargeter) was from Shropshire, so she was able to write about the area very well.

I would take at least one incomplete series and write my own next in series/ending; it would give me something to do on that bloody island :-)
