Pallavi (bookfetisher) Nice Manju :)
Thanks Jayanth :)

I am in Chapter 3 and liking it very much.
Hope you people have started it....

Sankara Jayanth S (sankarajayanth) | 1158 comments Manju isn't reading it, she's already read it. :D

I've not started it yet. Will do in a day or two. :)

message 6: by Pallavi (new)

Pallavi (bookfetisher) Lol
I speedread her comment ;)

Sankara Jayanth S (sankarajayanth) | 1158 comments @Pallavi How's it going so far? I've not started yet. I will finish Goblet of Fire in a day or two and start this book. :D

message 8: by Pallavi (new)

Pallavi (bookfetisher) It's going slowly here @Jayanth.
I'm savouring every inch.
In chapter 11 :)

Sankara Jayanth S (sankarajayanth) | 1158 comments Great. What are your thoughts on Nighteyes and Fitz so far? :D

message 10: by Pallavi (new)

Pallavi (bookfetisher) Nighteyes! Is not yet names as Nighteyes ;p
Fitz is good... A bit soft character and I wish he turns a bit sly than he is now. I like the Fool more.
Who is your favourite character in this trilogy?

message 11: by Sankara Jayanth (new)

Sankara Jayanth S (sankarajayanth) | 1158 comments Fitz! Fitz is my favorite character and Nighteyes, I forgot its name before it was called this, what is it?

I like the Fool too. He gets more interesting throughout the series!

I also love Lady Patience. My heart goes out for her when I think about her story. And Burrich too! Damn! Everyone is an effing good character in one way or another if I start to list them. Verity too. And Regal, does Regal make you angry like hell?

And Kettricken too!

Where are you in the story right now? I don't remember how this book starts after what happened in the earlier book.

message 12: by Pallavi (new)

Pallavi (bookfetisher) Oh Yes.... I hate Regal... But keeping Hobb in mind I think even he might have a backstory to make us pity him somewhere in next book...
I like all the characters you mentioned, but at different levels. But Fool makes me curious and his attempts to help Fitz in puzzles and verses are really good.

All the other characters show a normal and reasonable behaviour for their age/sex/social status but Fool is something completely out of this normal thing.

I'm in the part where Fitz tries to get "the cub" for hunting alone.

message 13: by Pallavi (last edited Feb 22, 2018 04:19AM) (new)

Pallavi (bookfetisher) NightEyes is so serious!!! :@

And why does King Shrewd takes Regal's side always?? Its Pathetic even when you know he has enough wrongs

message 14: by Sankara Jayanth (new)

Sankara Jayanth S (sankarajayanth) | 1158 comments The Fool is indeed a puzzle. I don't know, do you remember the first time Fitz met the Fool in book #1? The Fool speaks a puzzle, he repeats it a few times, each time modifying the sentence while he kinda acts like he is distracted by some noise in his head or something. Fitz doesn't understand a thing, as a first time reader, neither did I.

'Fitz!’ he intoned in a piping voice. ‘Fitz fitz fice fitz. Fatz sfitz.’
...
‘Fitz! Fitz fix fice fitz. Fats sfitzes.’
...
‘Fitz!’ he said emphatically, his voice cracking a little. ‘Fitz fitzes fyces fitz. Fatzafices.’
...
‘I said,’ he enunciated elaborately. ‘Fitz fixes fyce fits. Fat suffices.’
...
‘Hardly.’ He paused long enough to turn, and say, ‘Fitz fixes feists fits. Fat suffices. It’s a message, I believe. A calling for a significant act. As you are the only one I know who endures being called Fitz, I believe it’s for you. As for what it means, how should I know? I’m a Fool, not an interpreter of dreams. Good day.’

On my second reading last month, I realized what the message was in this particular exchange between the Fool and Fitz. And it kinda gives us more information about the enigmatic Fool.

Did you get the message in this puzzle when you read? or do you get it now? :D ;)

@Manju, you too!

message 15: by Pallavi (new)

Pallavi (bookfetisher) I'm trying to squeeze some meaning after you say this!
I guess I'm dumb:(
But is it something to do with Nighteyes??
I'm not getting the point....grrrrrrrr

message 16: by Sankara Jayanth (last edited Feb 22, 2018 09:16AM) (new)

Sankara Jayanth S (sankarajayanth) | 1158 comments It's alright, it will definitely go over the head until you reread the first book. :) Only the readers who are too too obsessed and have the skill to remember all foreshadowing can understand and realize stuff in the first read. I feel I'm pretty dumb too to grasp stuff like this. But on my reread, I felt incredibly giddy about understanding this little bit of foreshadowing. Okay. Now onto the explanation.

The Fool says that this is a message. That it is a call for a significant action. I don't remember if the Fool has told Fitz that he is a catalyst in their first meeting or not, but this hints that the Fool is predicting some action that Fitz has to or is going to do, so indirectly, he is telling that Fitz is a catalyst.

This conversation happens before Fitz is about the leave for Rippon on an assignment to understand Lord Kevlar's position on defending the coast from red ships and assassinate him if need be.

So you remember what Fitz does after he goes there? He saves Lord Kevlar's wife's dog in the kitchen, remember?

The dog's name is Feisty. It is having fits. Fitz uses fat(butter) to fix and save the dog.

Now here is the Fool's riddle: ‘Fitz fixes feists fits. Fat suffices.'

This realization brought up a whole lot of new questions to my head and the Fool became even more complicated to understand. How does his predictions or foretellings work? From the above quotes I mentioned, the way the Fool changes the puzzle into something more coherent, it seems like he himself is not able to understand whatever it is that is happening in side his head, as if he is trying to tune into or discern some meaning based on the noise or sounds that he's hearing.

message 17: by Pallavi (new)

Pallavi (bookfetisher) Oh yes... I remember that.
But that part was something less significant, if we consider many other important stuff that happened in Book 1.
Why did Fool predict that?why to foretell it at all??

message 18: by Sankara Jayanth (new)

Sankara Jayanth S (sankarajayanth) | 1158 comments Yes, it is less significant in terms of the whole plot, true. But it does give a unique insight into the Fool, one of the most important characters in the series and who as you have said is puzzling and interesting.

I can only theorize here. It was the Fool's first encounter with Fitz. The Fool was surprised that he is getting messages about Fitz, who is sort of a nobody at that point. The Fool is still very young at the time. He himself is not too sure how he gets these messages or why or where from. So when this particular buzz of a thought/vision gets into his mind, he speaks it out to Fitz, it doesn't matter whether it is significant or not, whether it matters at all, he just feels the need to let Fitz know. Even the Fool doesn't know what the heck it means, as he admits. He begins to sense that Fitz is going to be a catalyst in something big that will change the six duchies.

You will get explanations from the Fool soon enough I think :)

message 19: by Pallavi (new)

Pallavi (bookfetisher) Maybe you are right... Fool tries to rearrange words in every sentence till it makes some sense... But I never thought or remember reading that he was young though. He seems grown up especially in this book. More burdened.
.
Anyways I'm in Chapter 14: Winterfest.(view spoiler)

message 20: by Sankara Jayanth (new)

Sankara Jayanth S (sankarajayanth) | 1158 comments Actually I said young, I don't know if it was mentioned. What I meant was the Fool himself was still trying to become familiar with his abilities, I equated that to being young. :D

'burdened' is the right word for what he is going through. There is a lot of that happening to many characters in this series, which kinda makes this trilogy depressing and tragic for so many readers. The angst of people burdened beyond their age or what's normal is something that hits the gut hard, and when it is written and done so eloquently as Hobb did, the punch in the gut is even more painful. :/

You will get your answers, read on, read on...

message 33: by Sankara Jayanth (new)

Sankara Jayanth S (sankarajayanth) | 1158 comments Oooh, great.

I've not read anything for over 8 days nows, something has come up. I resumed this book today again, I'll have a lot of catching up to do. But I was frequently checking if you have written a review :D

So how was it?

message 34: by Pallavi (new)

Pallavi (bookfetisher) Review coming soon....
It was really good... And the third one is getting better :p
But no Fool yet in 3rd book :(

message 35: by Niveditha (new)

Niveditha Ravindra (nivedithar) | 155 comments Oh I wish I had gotten hold of this thread earlier! I finished the first trilogy. Didn't like the third book much. Found the personalities of Kettricken and Fool completely and inexplicably changed (and they were my favourite characters!) I had loved Kettricken's strength in the earlier books but here she has been reduced to a blubbering mess.

I also read a short novella, the events of which explain why 'The Wit' has been feared.

Anyone up for starting book 1 of the second trilogy?

message 36: by Pallavi (new)

Pallavi (bookfetisher) Hi Niveditha,
Yes I am planning to start the second Trilogy. Not Sure about the month/date to start this.
And I am afraid by the sheer size of it :(
