Book 1
since everyone else have read the book, so am not putting it in spoiler tags.
finished chapter 10 this morning and I think I will pick up some speed in coming days.
I thought Kyle to be cruel, mad, and stupid but the way he was with his wife, he was a different man. He was caring, loving, and for a moment I thought he was actually worried about Althea. perhaps he was but I am not so sure. He was too eager to own Vivicia. I also hated the mother for how she did not let Althea own the LivShip and ordered her to pass it on to the elder sister. I know the reasons she forced her husband to give the ship to Kyle instead of Brashen but she should have given Vivicia to Althea.
I am eager to see what next for Brashen and Althea. Where would he go? and I think Althea will run away from the house to pursue her destiny, whatever it is.

Agree!! specially how the characters' mind works here. everything is told in detail. so much similar to Farseer.

I will try to pick them up again soon. When do you think you'll pick up Fitz and the Fool? Early next year or even before? I guess Pallavi and Niveditha still have the Tawny Man to read even if they skip Rain Wild. I so want to buddy read the last 3 books 😐
Pallavi Sharma wrote: "Ha ha ha @Manju... Regarding Kyle it's the same still...."
oh.. i guess some people never change. but we still have two more books so anything can happen. ;)

@Jayanth - I wanted to skip RainWild but one of my friend said i should read them as they have information/characters relative to the final trilogy. So I guess I will read them soon as I want to wrap realm of elderlings this year.
I have 5 open books right now and that's the reason I am going this slow with LivShip. hopefully I will be able to wrap at least two books this week and get back to LivShip after that.

Manju, Pallavi, please don't read the spoilers ahead..:)

I will be taking a break from this trilogy for a bit, as I have a couple of other group reads lined up for October. Hopefully we can read book 3 together.

@Pallavi - regarding your post 97, my fingers are itching to search Amber now ;):P
finally finished and oh boy it was mind blowing. I think Wintrow made the worst mistake of his life when he told Vivicia to do what she like.
Malta - Once she got the box I must say I read all her parts and only then I went back and read the story in sequence. I wanted to whack that little twat and was so engrossed in her story. too bad Hobb did not concentrate on her as much as she did on Wintrow.
I loved Wintrow to the point where he decided to run away and become a slave. what a fool!!
Brashen & Althea, the only two sane characters in my opinion. I liked their story arc. finally Althea got on a ship and don't have to disguise as a boy. can't wait to see how would she react to Vivicia's capture and events in Bingtown.
Will Paragon sail again?

I am in the last Part (part-3) of the book...
High Summer...
So many threads straightened in the Part-2 and one more mystery introduced...ummmm
(view spoiler)

The Last Part "High Summer" actually really very good and the best part. Even though to know what will happen I have to pick up
"Ship of Destiny" soon!
@Manju, @Niveditha : Last book , let us start together :)

Yeah Sure @Niveditha :)
May be by that time we might finish LiveShip Traders and take a small break :)

I too started it today!
And seems like loose ends are going to be tied in this one :)

Malta was a surprise package, right from the moment she realized that Vivicia had been taken by the pirates.

I finished it yesterday night and I had dreams of ships and Althea (!!!)
Thank God, no dragons or serpents :P

@Niveditha: I liked it very much. Especially Kennit & Paragon's story.
All the unanswered questions are answered and happy that Verstrit Kids are much better. Wintrow, a sailor & Malta more sensible & Selden not a child anymore and can speak to dragon.
It was more emotional to me than the action/thrill. It was amazing to see all those characters grow as if in front of my eyes.

And not just Kennit, even Satrap Cosgo gets away with his foul treatment of Serilla. If either Serilla or Althea could have exacted some revenge on their tormentors, I would have been satisfied. But the feminist in me didn't like the way it went down at all. I ended up feeling bad for Althea. Can't believe that ending was written by a woman!
Wintrow was a vague floating character in this book who abruptly rises into prominence after Kennit's death. Just felt a bit off and unbelievable to me. Malta's grandmother..I forget her name, but she's a silly one. She plotted to give the liveship to Kyle and then suddenly becomes a wise and knowing grandma.. The inconsistencies in some of the characters was grating at times.
Of the pluses, I really liked Malta and Reyn's arc and Selden's too. Tintaglia was so awesome!
So overall, though the plot was good, I couldn't give it more than 3 stars.

The characters Kennit and Cosgo get away with horrible actions and that happens in real life too. Since it is a conceivable possibility that villains don't always get the harsh and complete justice that they deserve, I think Hobb is not wrong in choosing the same for these characters, that's the authors choice for the story. I remember how much angry and agitated I was after Kennit rapes Althea and gets away with it, Althea first feeling as if she did something wrong, or if she's remembering it wrongly, this grated me so much for a long time. I actually couldn't properly read the story after that incident and wanted to quickly go over to the place when Althea gets her revenge, I was sure she would.
What I'm saying is, while what you are disappointed with is entirely valid, you might just reconsider the target of criticism - because I have felt similarly after reading other books but then I read that article about reviewing the book that is written and I keep thinking how many times I thought I was disappointed with the book while in fact I was just hoping for something else to happen. It is still a valid reason for criticism, of course, just that maybe looking at it differently might help too. :)
Kennit should have gotten far worse than what he got. I do not remember another character in any book I have read whom I wanted to strangle other than Kennit. His manipulation and deception, and his skill in it, wow, that was so frustrating to see him manipulate everyone around him.
Cosgo will be in Rain Wild Chronicles, if I'm not wrong, so there is still time for sweet justice for him.
Niveditha wrote: "I liked the story overall. The pacing was a bit off, just like the concluding book of the Farseer trilogy. Moves at a languid pace for a while and becomes all too rushed at the end. I can still for..."
wow! I didn't think it this way. Kennit was a pirate and a manipulator so I wasn't expecting him to be turn into a saint and let go of Althea or his dream of being a pirate king. what he did was wrong but let just remember that he was wronged too. he was made to do the things that he hated. All that he suffered on the decks of Paragon, did not you feel pity for him? And there was nothing he could do to prevent it from coming out but making Paragon drown himself. I felt so bad when he manipulated the ship in sinking itself but when I thought on this later I found that he was so distraught over what he did. He was so conflicted. so even if anyone did not pursue any vengeance he end was still tragic and he suffered in his own way.
Satrap was a different matter. he was spoiled and had very less regard for others feelings and he paid for this haughtiness when he was shipped to Bingtown, then kidnapped by Rain wilders, later on his journey with Malta... he learned his lesson slowly and at times I guess he lost hope of living.
Wintrow's change was not sudden. Hobb honed his character right from the first book and ever since he started working under Kennit, the change in him was clear. the latter definitely helped him overcome a lot of things and taught him to be confident of himself and trusted in him which sadly none of his family did. Kennit cared for him in a way that Wintrow craved for, I guess.

Well said. :)
Well said. :)

Ronica was a strong character, I don't think she plotted to give Vivacia to Kyle but she forced herself to believe that the right owner for the ship is her first born Keffria and Althea will be finally grounded to the land to get a husband. Yes, her wrong decision did create the whole Liveship Traders Trilogy!!!
Wintrow,Malta and also Seldon changed drastically here and were grown up too. They understood what actually is in front of them and adapted themselves to those situations, just to live.
Althea and Brashen felt pushed towards the background a bit. It was more of Satrap,Kennit and Serpents/Dragons that were the most controversial parts in this book.
But I hate Kyle... I just hate him.

I think all of us forgot to mention Amber :) I think it was somewhere in the beginning of book 3, I started suspecting the truth and then once the enigmatic and riddled way of conversing began, I was pretty sure! :)

Anyway it was nice to read your thoughts, everyone! What's the next book on the agenda?
Niveditha wrote: "Looks like I'm in the minority here about Kennit. Sure even I didn't expect him to be a saint, especially given his back story, but his followers and friends, especially Vivacia and Wintrow did not..."
your view on Kennit made me think of him in a new light. I didn't see that angle until you point it out.
as for Vivicia and Wintrow, he never let Vivicia know the truth and same goes for his followers and friends. Only a few chosen one knew the darkness in him. I don't think Wintrow was capable of hatred. The only person he truly hated was Kyle and that too because the man never showed him any kindness but on the other hand Kennit showered Wintrow with affection, love, and kindness. Even though he was using the boy for his own good but there was no denying that he loved Wintrow in his selfish way. And when Wintrow came to know of what happened to Althea it was too late to do anything...
I loved the Charm and i too wished a bigger role from him in the end. :(
I am already halfway through in the second book of the Rain Wild Chronicles. If you two decide to go ahead with Tawny Man, I will be here to talk that story arc with you here.. :)

I don't know what spoiler you are talking about w.r.t Amber, (view spoiler)[but I know a huge huge one with ramifications expanding to the other trilogies in the series. (hide spoiler)] And the less we talk about it, the better because we wouldn't accidently spoil it 😁😅
@Manju I'll reveal it once you finish the trilogy. 😉
The characters become, among many things, more mature in 2 remaining books. The agitation and angst you feel for some characters will reach unbearable levels, so be warned. 😝
