Find out what we're reading and discuss the choices here. Add your voice to the book debate, talk about interesting things you've learned, share you opinions.

Jorge Selva | 2 comments A fascinating concept discussed in section 1 is the universality of physical laws and how this principle was discovered. The same laws that govern space and time on this planet apply to the heavens. Amazing.

Great quote - "In modern times, if the sole measure of what's out there flows from your five senses then a precarious life awaits you."

Taking this lesson and applying to everyday life would be a great practice. There are always things that extend beyond the limits of what you can observe, perceive or know. Never forget that.

It is amazing, it fascinates me sometimes to realise that we take a lot of our knowledge that we have today for granted. The idea that the same physical laws are in operation on Earth as on Jupiter seems obvious to us now, but it is really astounding that we as a species were able to learn that. Much of that knowledge has been gleaned from using instruments with capabilities above and beyond our own senses, that quote perfectly captures this.

*edit - I'm gonna close this general thread to move the discussion into the Death by Black Hole thread.
