SOLVED. Short story: Horror/horror-lite/strange story from around 1850-1930

I am searching for a short story I read many years ago. Horror/horror-ligth/strange story about a man (and woman) who has been infected with a green plant and has slowly been overgrown with it. He/they do not look like humans any more. He/they has retracted from other people, because of how he/they look and not to infect others.

I have a vague idea that most of the story takes part on a ship and the narrator sails to a lost ship or island and discovers the man there. It is possible the man stays in water most of the time.

It has been written before 1990, probably more like 1850-1930. The style is like Poe/Lovecraft/Conan Doyle strange story.

The story is probably around 20-40 pages.

Found it myself. Very hard to search for when “green plant” actually is a grey fungus.

The Voice in the Night by William Hope Hodgson.

A very fine short story. Said to be Hodgson most creepy.
