This was a pretty interesting read but somehow I can’t recall a single specific detail about it. I think my brain was overloaded by all the bonkers book covers
I started this and took a break from it. Interesting but comes off like someone who really loves the subject and doesn't get most people aren't such fanatics about it.
I read it a few months ago. The author's love of the genre really shows through, and I enjoyed his humor. It provided a couple of new books for me to add to my ever-growing "to read" list.
I just finished this, and I had so much fun reading it! When I was a young teen in the late '70s and early '80s, I read a lot of the classic weird writers (Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, etc), pulp science fiction, and SO MUCH mass-market paperback horror. I read a lot of the books that Hendrix talks about in here, and many more besides. It was fun to see some of the old covers again. I read all the subgenres, but my favorite stories featured haunted houses and vampires (although it took 4 attempts to get through Interview with the Vampire!) I also loved gothic novels (and I still do). Hendrix' summaries of some of the books were hilarious-- I caught myself laughing out loud a couple of times. I'm really happy that I had the chance to read this book, and I have the feeling that it will be a useful reference in the years to come.
I am really enjoying Paperbacks from Hell. Its constantly on my night table as a quick pick up read. I also find it right now my go to guide for vintage horror from the 70s to the early 90's. After reading it I found so many new horror titles and authors to choose from that I haven't heard about before that it has got me excited for hunting out new horror treasures in used bookstores and flea markets. It's a great horror compendium especially for those new to the horror genre with great illustrations of novels from the golden age of horror literature as well as, well written and sometimes quite funny essays on the different genre of horror of the time. Even a grizzled old veteran of horror like me finds some new and refreshing tidbits. Plus Grady Hendrix is a great horror author that has some really new and refreshing ideas and a good knowledge of horror fiction not only from a writers stand point but as a fan of the genre himself.
