SOLVED. High fantasy or hero fantasy book about a young boy sent to train at an academy. [s]

I would guess about 5 to 10 year old fantasy novel. It is about a young man who's mother has passed, raised by his father. They don't get along and he ends up going off to some school or another to be trained. I remember one portion of the training where all of the boys are dropped into a forest of some kind and they must get back to the school. The young man goes through many trials, and the training has multiple disciples. I remember one part where he is sent of to train with some medics. It seems to me the young man ends up being a famous warrior. Thank you for any assistance.
