MountainKat | 31599 comments Let's reflect on the best and worst of the previous month's books.....

I know I can get so focused on what is next that I forget about all the wonderful books I read for the previous month's challenges! We are already one full month into the new year! Is winter getting you down? Or are you like me, wishing we would get a little bit of winter before it is over?! I mean seriously, 80+ degrees on February 1st - we need rain! You've heard of SAD - I get reverse SAD, I need seasons! Well, now that you know way too much about me, let's get back to books shall we? How did January's reading go for you? Did you begin the year with lots of great books or did you get some duds? Are you on track for your reading resolutions or have you broken them already?

Did you discover some gems last month? DNF a few? Find your new book boyfriend or a heroine who personifies TSTL? Come on, we all want to know! What were your standouts for January? Was it is a good start to the new reading year for you?

MountainKat | 31599 comments I had one great book early in the month - a reread, but in audio this time! Dead By Midnight: An I-Team Christmas was even better the second time around! Another 5 star book, also by Pamela Clare, was Close to Heaven - loved everything about this! And my last 5 Star book in January was completely different from the other two, A Destiny of Dragons. The audio of this was fabulous!!

Several other really good books in January - The Final Score, The V Card, Seventh Grave and No BodyBlood Fury, Most Likely to Score and To Sir Phillip, With Love!

No duds, but I struggled a bit with RoomHate and Toys for Good Girls. I just didn't ever feel connected to the characters in either.

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Oooh - Destiny of Dragons is on my list for this round's MnG :D Sometimes the next books don't live up to the first one but good to hear you really enjoyed this one!

I had quite a few five stars in January:

A couple of them very focussed on social issues:
Enjoy the Dance ~ gay marriage, foster care, illegal immigrants
Shelter the Sea ~ ppl with disabilities like autism/social anxiety and their rights to independent living.

and With This Bling (love the humour inherent in the writing), Hoarfrost & Heart of Obsidian (great PNRs) and Frog (a fav reread) :D

No books rated less than 3 stars, so that's always a positive!

Robin (robinmy) No 5-Star books in January, but I had several 4.5-Star books:
Simple Jess (Marrying Stone, #2) by Pamela Morsi Murder on Astor Place (Gaslight Mystery, #1) by Victoria Thompson The Crossing (Harry Bosch, #18; Mickey Haller, #6; Harry Bosch Universe, #27) by Michael Connelly A Rose at Midnight by Anne Stuart The Perfect Family by Kathryn Shay

It was good, but different than the first. Same crazy energy and characters though. And the narrator was as good as I remembered!

Shannon I read and listened to a lot of great books in January. My biggest disappointment was Midsummer Moon It's my first DNF book this year. I'm new to goodreads so I had to make a new shelf. Sort of bummed me out, but I just couldn't finish it.

I did however have great success with a new to me writer Caroline Linden Love and Other Scandals and her Carlisle series. I'm on the last in this series and will definitely be reading more from her. I may be obsessed. ;)

MountainKat | 31599 comments Sorry to hear that Midsummer Moon didn't work for you. I haven't read that one, but I have read a couple of others by her and liked them.

Irene (raenne) | 47 comments I had two five star reads in January: Turtles All the Way Down by John Green and Wonder by R.J. Palacio. Wonder was a reread, so Turtles All the Way Down was my favorite read :) I can't stop talking about it!

My least favorite was What Light by Jay Asher, which I only gave two stars. It was a little too cliché for my taste :)

Fran | 12278 comments I had two really good reads in January- Stud Finder by Lauren Blakely and Where the Lovelight Gleams by Keira Andrews . Both were sweet and fun - four stars for both.

No duds in January. I read a few other 3 star reads, so overall a good reading month :)

MountainKat | 31599 comments I really enjoyed Stud Finder too!

Cyliena | 401 comments The best for me was Christi Caldwell's The Heiress's Deception. I went into it expecting just an "OK" read, but it was really engaging, and quickly rocketed into 4-star territory.

The Heiress's Deception (Sinful Brides, #4) by Christi Caldwell

The worst is a tie between TinderElla and Seduction and Surrender. I rated them both as 2-stars on here, but they're closer to 1.5-star reads to me. TinderElla simply had a too-absurd plot, while Seduction and Surrender's hero was terrible, initially trying to pressure the heroine into bed and generally being a presumptuous, deceitful jerk.

The cover art for TinderElla was pretty hot, though!
Seduction and Surrender (The Billionaire's Temptation, #1) by Cali MacKay TinderElla by Eddie Cleveland
