Scars was a difficult read, as I read it very soon after a murder of a young child occurred on the small island I grew up on. I also remember the coverage of the Wakefield incident referred to in the book where a school janitor/caretaker murdered two girls. The monochrome line style of the artwork evoked a mundane realism, and certainly heightened the horror inherent in the story.
