The moment Spencer meets Hope the summer before seventh grade, it’s . . . something at first sight. He knows she’s special, possibly even magical. The pair become fast friends, climbing trees and planning world travels. After years of being outshone by his older brother and teased because of his Tourette syndrome, Spencer finally feels like he belongs. But as Hope and Spencer get older and life gets messier, the clear label of “friend” gets messier, too.

Through sibling feuds and family tragedies, new relationships and broken hearts, the two grow together and apart, and Spencer, an aspiring scientist, tries to map it all out using his trusty system of taxonomy. He wants to identify and classify their relationship, but in the end, he finds that life doesn’t always fit into easy-to-manage boxes, and it’s this messy complexity that makes life so rich and beautiful.

Up to Part 3: (view spoiler)[ I love the main character Spencer. He's so sweet and really cares about Hope. I ship them so hard, but Hope and Dean....That kinda grosses me out tbh because a high schooler dating a middle schooler is weird to me and Dean seems like a bigtime player. Pretty sure Janie sees through all his crap, which makes me happy. (hide spoiler)]

Up to Part 4: (view spoiler)[ I almost cried in Chapter 10...The teary eyes were real though. Why did Janie have to die? And seeing the effect it has on Hope is heartbreaking. I knew she and Dean would end up together, but the way it all ended was messy and I saw it coming. I used to ship Hope and Spencer, but I can't because I know she'll break his heart and she already has. Their friendship is under some serious strain and I'm worried. This is not exactly the light-fluffy contemporary I assumed it was. (hide spoiler)]

Up to Part 5: (view spoiler)[AAAHH I wish Hope would stop being so annoying and just talk to Spencer. They were best friends as kids and after Janie's death, Hope just ignored him. It just makes me really sad :( But I love the shift in Dean's personality and his overall development. Even if Dean cared about his brother's disability, he had never shown it till recently. I don't ship Jayla and Spencer, but Spencer is super happy with her (even if he isn't over Hope) and I'm scared Hope will do something to wreck that. Don't break his heart again Hope, don't do it. Up to Part 6: (view spoiler)[Jayla is definitely jealous of Hope, but it's pretty evident that she probably has feelings for Justin, so I feel like she and Spencer will break up in Part 6....I don't know if Spencer and Hope are going to end up together, but after the Pumpkin Spice Latte, I think Hope's character has shifted into letting Spencer be her friend again like they should have always been, so we shall see where that goes. Things are a little slow right now, which I don't mind, but at the same time, I want something big and dramatic to happen. Throw the characters a curveball that doesn't include death ya know? (still not over Janie's death) (hide spoiler)]
