message 1: by Sera (new)

Sera | 3 comments I am doing a little self-project that involves myself and a journal type book. I am trying to fill it up with reasons why myself and other people read, why reading is special and why it is important to keep reading. In doing this, I am hoping that when a reading slump hits me I can go and look in this book filled with all the reasons listed above and find the motivation to pick up a book again. So if you could please help aid me in my project by telling me reasons why reading is special to you and why you simply just read in general, I will be internally grateful.

Tyler Gray (wickedjr89) I read for enjoyment

I read to learn new things

I read to know i'm not alone (i'm bisexual and disabled for example, it's nice to read a book and see a part of myself reflected in a character. To know other people have felt the same way. It applies to more than bisexual and disabled though)

I read to learn other people's point of view and see the world through someone else's eyes

I read to escape reality for a bit, for a much needed break

I read to fall in love with characters

I read to keep my mind active and from atrophying

I have lots of reasons why I read :)

Colleen Scidmore (colleensreadingadventures) | 18 comments Reading takes me out of my head. I love that you use you're own brain to imagine what the author is trying to tell instead of watching TV and mindlessly going along.
I also have health issues and reading makes it easier to cope, especially on bad days.
Reading also takes me to many locations I would never be able to go in real life!

Thank you, everyone, for sharing your reasons why you read with me, it means a lot and I am very grateful for it <3

RyanneAndHerBooks | 64 comments I read to go to worlds that I could never go to without books. I read to escape life when it gets to be too much. I read to further the strength of my brain and expand my vocabulary. I read to bring a smile to my face and a lightness in my heart. I read because for me, reading is like breathing. Without it I would be overwhelmed. I read because it is everything to me. Reading is my love. ❤

message 6: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Bowe (sarahsbookstack) I read because I love to escape. To see the world through other's eyes.

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 342 comments I enjoy the art of storytelling and seeing all the imagination that's out there.

I love learning new things. It bugs me that there is knowledge out there that I don't have. (I'm a Ravenclaw.)

I have depression, and reading gets me out of myself; it's an escape.

Melliott (goodreadscommelliott) | 510 comments Stories. New stories, old stories told in new ways.

Escape.

˙⋆✮ Anny ✮⋆˙ (annithebookprincess) I read because it's fun, because I can escape into other, fictional worlds... I don't know, I just can't imagine not to read, I just need books!

to escape the burdensome reality...

message 12: by Manisha (new)

Manisha | 8 comments My reason is simplistic but true.

I like stories. I enjoy watching stories, reading stories and hearing about stories. Reading is a way to achieve this.

message 13: by Errin (new)

Errin Stevens (errintevens) | 27 comments Reading is an escape for me, too, but it's also the most loving self-care thing I do each day. It accesses a special place in my brain that blurs the line between thought and action, imagination and reality... and it truly stabilizes me.

Juliettechevalier | 2 comments I love reading because I always wanted to know how other people see the world and reading makes me experience that kind of thing.
I love reading because it gives me an other perspective on life, love and obstacles that life throws at me.
I read because I know that books will always be there for me and I like to believe that all the characters that I read about are the one that shaped me. It might sound weird but I don’t know how to explain it..

message 19: by Ron (new)

Ron Wroblewski That is a hard question for me to answer. I have read all my life. I won every book reading contest in school by a wide margin. I got in trouble in the classroom for reading things other then what the class was teaching. I take a book everywhere I go because I hate to waste a minute waiting for anything. Reading calms me, intrigues me, envelopes me, keeps my mind and imagination going. The more you put into your mind the more combinations your mind can come up with to solve problems. I love it when authors make me part of the story - I live through them. If I ever did not have access to books I don't know what I would do. I have 2200 books in storage, and another 180 on paperbackswap plus the 25 or so I carry around in the RV. I don't have reading slumps - there is just so much more out there to learn about. It's not just that reading is a part of me. I am reading.
Ron

message 20: by Sharon (new)

Sharon I read because it’s what I’ve always done. It’s more than a hobby.....it’s my passion. I read to escape when the world gets to be too much. I read to expand my vocabulary. I love when I get so lost in reading that I have a “movie” playing in my head of the story. Reading makes me feel I have friends in the characters I read about since I’m a tad anti-social and making friends is difficult.

I can so identify. Movies play in my head as I read also.

message 22: by Carissa (new)

Carissa (coolkidsread) | 46 comments I read because it genuinely makes me happy. I enjoying diving into a story with well-developed characters and a great plot. I love reading through the perspective of another voice who has their own views and ideas and feelings. I love traveling through books. I read to escape reality and to give myself some relaxation. I read to learn new things. I read to stimulate my brain. I read because I love playing stories in my head and using my imagination. I constantly say dream so when I read it’s as if I’m playing someone else’s day dream in my head. I love reading because it is something that I discovered and found a deep passion for. I am so grateful for books.

message 23: by MiMi (new)

MiMi | 2 comments Sometimes i read to feel things, emotions that my life may not make me feel anytime soon. Some other time i read to relate .....and others to learn new things.

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

I read because I think it's fun and it helps through the mental issues I go through since it's like a form of stress relief.

message 25: by Sabrien (new)

Sabrien Abdelrahman | 72 comments I love reading, beyond like.
Escapism. Feels. Happiness. Beauty. Power. Passion. Writing is so beautiful and awe-inspiring. Inspirational. Creative. Resonating within me. Pushes me to want to become an author. The question for me isn't why I love to read, it's why I wouldn't.

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

I read to shut out the world around me. I didn't start reading as much as I do now until a couple years ago - when I started going through really long periods of depression and anxiety. Books helped me through these rough times and continue to just be a complete joy for me. :D

message 27: by Pareesé (new)

Pareesé | 17 comments I read because reading takes me to other places. It also helps me forget about my problems.

message 28: by EJ (new)

EJ (symphonyinvellichor) | 6 comments Its the best escape route from studies, and drama...
I'm a 15 year old "extreme" introvert going through high school. A book is a good way to tell people around me to exclude me from their 24×7 chatter (Though i end up being the mysterious brooding personality of the class). Books are my lifeblood. It is the reason i haven't gone insane already. Nothing better than a good book to calm you down after a noisy, hectic day and help you deal with the aforementioned teenage drama. Added benefits of increased brain activity, creativity, inspiring characters, literature and authors.

message 29: by Alex (new)

Alex | 27 comments because when the real world turns to shit, you can always rely on a good book and excellent characters to pull you through anything

message 30: by Angelia (new)

Angelia (angeldawn) | 12 comments It's my "me time". It helps me decompress and stop stressing for a little while about work and family. It's one of the few things I make sure I find some time to do daily.

message 32: by Olanrewaju (new)

Olanrewaju (grandmasterace) | 14 comments For the same reason I watch films, cartoons, anime and anything fictional.........I am transported to a world of wonder where anything is possible.

message 33: by Sabrien (new)

Sabrien Abdelrahman | 72 comments Also it puts you in someone else's head and helps you see perspective when you're reading from someone else's narrative. (So reading from the POV of LGBTQIA+ characters, other types of POC, etc.) it builds understanding and acceptance. I know that in how I was raised, if i didn't read, my perspective on certain things would be way different.

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

Its nice to get out of the "real world" for a while and just dive into a world that brings you relaxation :)

message 35: by Natalia (new)
