I read this trilogy in the early 1980s when I was in middle school and it may have been old even then. It was told from the point of view of Noah’s neighbor, who helps him gather all the animals. Noah’s son, Ham, was supposed to help but he has run off and joined a cult and wears jingle bells on his ankles. The books were funny and about the travels and misadventures of the neighbor as he searches for the animals.

Spoiler: the neighbor ends up going on the ark at the end because Ham has disappeared
