All I remember about the book is one episode, of a girl bringing apples to her schoolroom. She tells the classroom that each can have a red apple, a green apple, or a yellow apple. I thought it might be Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm or Understood Betsy, but neither has the appropriate scene. I do have the impression that this girl was new to her school, probably a one-room or very small school, and maybe a city or spoiled child new to rural, friendly life. Not a picture book, but not YA; published before 1985 and possibly decades earlier; certainly set before, say, 1960.

I have not laid my hands on the book yet but the instant I glimpsed the title, read the synopsis, and saw the cover, I was sure this is it: Katie Kittenheart by Miriam Mason. I have made an ILL request. Woot!
