message 51: by Helen (new)

Helen (helenlizm) | 39 comments Thanks for reminding me about the 100 top shelves Marina - I'd forgotten about that. I have found a 1 star book but it's nearly £4 for a Kindle edition so I'm not prepared to waste money on a book that is going to be c**p. Instead I will finish a book that I abandoned weeks ago because I just couldn't get into it - The Whistler by John Grisham which will cover the legal thriller shelf.

Rachelnyc | 943 comments I finished Night so Germany can be checked off! Good thing I'm "working" from home today because there were tears so not a great book to read in public.

Will start The Sound of Gravel: A Memoir later today which ticks the Mexico shelf.

message 53: by Danielle (new)

Danielle (mustbinsane) | 18 comments I'm currently reading Beneath the Sugar Sky and it looks like it will count for some shelves we don't have yet!!

message 54: by Marina (last edited Jan 29, 2018 01:22PM) (new)

Marina | 1312 comments I've updated Post #11 with all the completed books and shelves and some of the books being read now I've also tried to fit in. There are a few books from the spreadsheet I haven't added to the list because they can fit a lot of shelves so it's going to be easy to fit them in.

I'm off to bed soon so I can do some reading, but I'll update the list again in the morning if it's needed 😊

message 55: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Barstad (maidenoflight) Well done team! I have about 50 pages left of my book then will move on to One Hundred Years of Solitude

message 56: by Hilde (last edited Jan 29, 2018 01:54PM) (new)

Hilde (hilded) | 821 comments Great progress, team! I have finished Out of Africa, so Africa can also be checked off. It was very good, glad I finally got to read it :)

I am off to bed as well, and will start on Passing next (my copy is 134 pages).

Thanks for all the good adm work, Marina!

message 57: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments I just finished A Tale of Two Cities, and I can't believe how good it was! So we can mark that complete on our list.

message 58: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Finished The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu. I think I'm going to start City of the Fallen Angels next. It will hit both Italy and true crime.

message 59: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments I'm reading The Bones of the Earth for AtYRC and it has a "cover-love" shelf at the end of its 1st page :)

Marina | 1312 comments Zaz wrote: "I'm reading The Bones of the Earth for AtYRC and it has a "cover-love" shelf at the end of its 1st page :)"

I never thought we would find a book for that shelf. Well done :-)

message 61: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments Me neither, but it's self-published so with just 1-2 shelving, the shelf is on the 1st page :D

message 62: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Thank you to whoever updated the spreadsheet with my book! It was on my to-do list for today :-)

Marina | 1312 comments Amanda wrote: "Thank you to whoever updated the spreadsheet with my book! It was on my to-do list for today :-)"

That was me 😊 I needed a break from reading so I updated the spreadsheet. I wanted to update the list as well but never got that far. I'll have a look now though!

message 64: by Katie (new)

Danielle (mustbinsane) | 18 comments Finished Beneath the Sugar Sky, then read Binti (which is too short to count for this). So next are Binti:Home and Binti The Night Masquerade (which I added to the spreadsheet).

Done and I think I'll reserve True-crime for this one

So I named the wrong book last night. I'm reading The City of Falling Angels not City of Fallen Angels. I made a couple of corrections to the shelves listed on the worksheet.

Sorry for the confusion!

The ones written in italic is the ones we haven't had a match for yet, so for those of you looking for a challenge you need to hunt down one of those 😊

We can always make changes but I thought it would be nice to see how far we already are.
If I've made any mistakes please let me know.

message 71: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments I love seeing the whole list like this. Thanks for putting it together, Marina. Great job, team!

message 72: by Helen (new)

Helen (helenlizm) | 39 comments If I finish The Whistler (which I should do as I'm over two thirds of the way through), I'll read A Christmas Carol by Dickens to cover the ghost story shelf.

message 73: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Barstad (maidenoflight) Great work Marina! We are getting there team, keep up the good work.

I have 15 pages left of What if? and i am 60% done with One hundred years of solitude.

message 74: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
Sorry everyone, I overestimated how much I could get done last night. But I'm going to really try to get finished with it tonight.

After that, I want to read a short story so I can check off #51 of the challenge and get a little ahead. I added Shawshank Redemption to the spreadsheet but I may change it out. It isn't a priority read for me and it looks like it's one of many for most of the shelves. When I get home, I'm going to see if I can find a good ghost story.

message 75: by Marina (last edited Jan 30, 2018 12:29PM) (new)

Marina | 1312 comments I just finished Joyride to Jupiter and I'm almost halfway through Beartown.
I've started The Lost Hero: The Graphic Novel even though graphic novels isn't something I normally read but why not try something new and I needed it for the individual challenge 😊
I haven't added it to the spreadsheet but it can definitely tick off mythology.

Tomorrow I won't have as much time during the day since I'm meeting a friend for afternoon tea and then I'm going to the movies with my nephew to see Maze runner. I'll try to squeeze in some reading before and after and I might take an audiobook with me.

Rachelnyc | 943 comments Heather wrote: "I’m so confused guys will somebody explain for me? I’ve been reading just don’t understand the readathon"

Hi Heather. Did you read the instructions in the first post in this thread? Basically, we need to match the shelves listed in #1 with the top 100 shelves for the books we are reading. If you look at post #11 there is a link to the spreadsheet Marina created and you can update that with the books you are reading/have read during the challenge.

If you are still confused, perhaps just post which books you are reading or have read and someone can help?

message 78: by Rachelnyc (last edited Jan 30, 2018 01:42PM) (new)

Rachelnyc | 943 comments I'm about 60% done with The Sound of Gravel: A Memoir and hope to finish it tonight or on my way to work tomorrow.

Next up is Fahrenheit 451 which just became available through my library. I just updated the spreadsheet with that and with one more that I hope to get to, Maybe in Another Life which gives us the 3-star shelf.

message 79: by Katie (last edited Jan 30, 2018 06:38PM) (new)

Katie | 2360 comments I just finished The Great Quake: How the Biggest Earthquake in North America Changed Our Understanding of the Planet and have started The Dark Net: Inside the Digital Underworld. I'm not sure what I'll read next, so I'm on the hunt for my next read.

message 80: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments I just started Heather, the Totality. It's a short book (140 something pages) so I'll probably finish it tonight or tomorrow morning.

message 81: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments Okay, I finished Heather, the Totality. It was totally lame, but just long enough to count toward this challenge. I put it in the spreadsheet, so it is ready for you to pick a shelf for it, Marina.

message 82: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Barstad (maidenoflight) I finished What If?: Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions. So that shelf can be xhecked off now.

I will check some of the other books I have to see if they fit the shelves with no books.

message 83: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Barstad (maidenoflight) I am going to read Voices from Chernobyl: The Oral History of a Nuclear Disaster next. Put it wherever you can fit it.

message 84: by Marina (new)

Marina | 1312 comments 20 shelves completed!!! Well done team 😊

I'm missing 100 pages in Beartown so I'll finish it today and I also hope to finish my graphic novel. After that I'll start reading We Have Always Lived in the Castle for the gothic shelf and maybe the next graphic novel in the series. I'm also going to try and find an audiobook.

When I'm home tonight I'll have a look where the new book fits!

Happy reading everybody 😉

message 85: by Hilde (new)

Hilde (hilded) | 821 comments I only have about 10 % left of Passing, so I am sure I will finish tonight :) It was really hard to put down once I started it, always good to be positively surprised. I expected it to be good, but thought it would be a slow read, which turns out, not at all!

But before I can do any reading tonight, I have a looong day at work today with lots of meetings, but tomorrow should be better :)

message 86: by Heather (new)

Heather | 236 comments I understand it now! I just have to find the spreadsheet and I will get to filling in books.

message 87: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
Heather, it's in message 11 of this thread.

Helen, just a heads up, ghost story isn't listed in the top 100 shelves of A Christmas Carol. I really like ghost stories but I'm still struggling to find a book for that shelf :|

message 88: by Marina (new)

Marina | 1312 comments Im listening to M Is for Magic but it only had ghosts listed not ghost-story 🙄

message 89: by Helen (new)

Helen (helenlizm) | 39 comments Thanks for the heads up Laura - it's so hard to check when you're using the app on a mobile. Was thinking about changing to poetry anyway as I'd read your post about trying to find a ghost story. Will endeavour to finish The Whistler tonight and then go from there.

message 90: by Helen (new)

Helen (helenlizm) | 39 comments Laura - one of my TBR for my challenge is Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill which does have ghost story in its top 100 shelves so unless you have any objection, I'll get hold of a copy and read that one next.

message 91: by Rachelnyc (new)

Rachelnyc | 943 comments Finished The Sound of Gravel so Mexico is completed.

I will be starting Fahrenheit 451 and I'm not sure where it fits best but it's on the spreadsheet and there should be plenty of options.

message 92: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
That works, Helen! It's a fantastic book so I'm excited to hear you'll be reading it :)

message 93: by MKay (new)

MKay | 55 comments Hair appointment this afternoon means lots of reading while sitting. Maybe I can get close if not finish!

message 94: by Amanda (new)

Amanda I don't think I'll be able to finish City of the Falling Angels until tomorrow. I've started eying a couple possibilities for the loved shelf (Hunger Games, Divergent, or (if I can get a copy from the library) The Fault of Our Stars).

message 95: by Danielle (new)

Danielle (mustbinsane) | 18 comments I've finished Binti:Home and am 1/4 through Binti: Night MAsquerade. I may finish it at lunch. After that, I'm going to do Daughter of the Forest which should count for "Book club" and The Broken Eye which could count for "5 stars".

message 96: by Helen (new)

Helen (helenlizm) | 39 comments Have finished The Whistler (legal thriller) and will start Heart Shaped Box (ghost story).

message 97: by Marina (new)

Marina | 1312 comments Wow, there's a lot of updates today. I'll look at it now and great work 😊

I just finished Beartown. Once again I loved Backman's story. He has definitely become a favourite author of mine!

message 98: by Hilde (new)

Hilde (hilded) | 821 comments Just finished Passing, quite enjoyed this little book 😊

message 99: by Hilde (new)

Hilde (hilded) | 821 comments I am thinking of starting The hate U give next, and since it's YA I am hoping it is a fast read. For those of you who have read it, is it fast paced?

The Hate U Give is fantastic and yes a fast and powerful read.
