He had been diagnosed four years ago, but chose not to make the news public. RIP.

Her Daughter, Rachel Stirling, has released such an incredibly touching tribute to her Mum ...

"My Beloved Ma died peacefully in her sleep early this morning, at home, surrounded by family. She died of cancer diagnosed in March, and spent her last months joyfully reflecting on her extraordinary life, full of love, laughter and a deep pride in her profession. I will miss her beyond words"

Lez | 7490 comments Many, many years ago, Dame Diana was appearing at Liverpool's Royal Court Theatre and one morning I saw her sitting on a bench in St John's Gardens, reading a book. At the other end of the bench was one of the regular down'n outs reading the racing in the L'Pool Daily Post. It made a lovely cameo. That's when a mobile comes in handy!

Saw him a few years ago at, of all places, Cleethorpes Pier. A verr, verr dhrunken night and great gig (well, they usually are if you're pissed) with my ex-bro-in-law. He was quite an impassive, still and stocky figure onstage despite his impassioned vocals. Only just released a new album;

Amazing what you find if you search for it; here is brief footage of that gig and, disappointingly for you all, I can't spot myself - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vb69t...

And here's a full hour of a 75 Winterland gig;

As Les McQueen of Crème Brûlée always said, "It's a shit business, rock 'n' roll." And people like Sharon Osbourne make it a whole lot worse, although I've no doubt Ozzy would behave just as badly if his brain still worked.

theDuke | 6501 comments Jackie Stallone, died 21st Sept aged 98.

According to Wikipedia, she was an astrologer, dancer, circus performer, and a promoter of women's wrestling..and more famously...mum to Sly Stallone, singer Frank Stallone, and actress Toni D'Alto.

It also says that her family lived with Charles Atlas, who trained the family in gymnastics, weight lifting, and jogging. So that explains Sly then.

Great age..died peacefully in sleep at home with her family.

suzysunshine7 | 16062 comments Sir Harold Evans ... another 'Manchester lad done good' ... was the legendary Journalist who, amongst so many other things, exposed the Thalidomide Scandal, and ran campaigns on Cervical Cancer which then led onto the National implementation of Screening Programmes.

He died yesterday in New York at the age of 92.

Reuters, the multinational Media Company, has paid tribute to him by writing: “We mourn the loss of Sir Harold Evans, who set the world’s gold standard for journalism.”

“His 70-year career as an investigative journalist, magazine founder, book publisher and author made him one of the most influential media figures of his generation.”

Val H. | 22282 comments A couple of Aussie legends now departed. Cricketer Dean Jones had a heart attack while commentating in India - only 59. With 52 tests and 164 one-day games to his name and a batting average of 46.55, he was the hero of many Aussies. He also had the advantage of being a Victorian in a national team that so often draws its members from NSW.

And Max Merritt (born in New Zealand but a long-time resident of Australia). He was 79 but had been suffering from Goodpasture Syndrome for many years. The only time the ARIA Awards (Australian Recording Industry) were held in Melbourne - 2008 - I scored tickets and got to see Max inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame, alongside The Triffids, Dragon, Russell Morris - and Rolf Harris!

and for his signature dance moves - Wiki says "Video clips ... show Head to have been a dynamic and versatile eccentric dancer; there are at least three extant clips of him performing "Treat Her Right" and each one is different from the others in terms of choreography. Modern viewers have compared his jumps and slides to those of James Brown or even the Nicholas Brothers...."

Brass Neck | 3979 comments Eddie Van Halen, 65, of throat cancer. Only saw them once in 78 or 79 as support for a Black Sabbath who were tired and going through the motions shortly before Ozzy was sacked. Their 30-40 minutes was an awe-inspiring, energetic and eye-popping romp through most of their ground-breaking debut album. I caught a drumstick but didn't hold on tight enough so someone who wanted it more ripped it from my grasp. RIP Eddie.

A fascinating life. The first graduate of a British university to top the charts. The composer of some of those early hits was a Jamaican guy, which was not known to me. RIP Spencer.

The 2 biggest hits - Keep On Runnin' and Somebody Help Me were written by Jackie Edwards, a fact also unbeknownst to me until I read the obit.

Edit - given the absence of decent publishing or indeed any contracts in Jamaican music, I wonder if he got any royalties from the two big hits?

Val H. | 22282 comments Farewell Jerry Jeff Walker, aged 78, of throat cancer. He'll always be known for writing "Mr Bojangles", but there were so many other terrific songs - "Gettin' By", "Sangria Wine", etc - plus he popularised many songs by Guy Clark, Gary P. Nunn and Ray Wylie Hubbard. "Viva Terlingua" was always my favourite album. I'm glad I got to see him back in the 70s.

message 843: by Serial (new)

Serial Sock Trumpet (serialsocktrumpet) | 1998 comments A little incident Billy Joe was involved in at aged 70.

LOL

https://www.houstonpress.com/music/gi...

Shaver stopped into a Lorena, Texas, bar for a beer with his former wife Wanda, and ended up in an altercation with a patron. Shaver testified the man was rude to his wife and told Shaver to “shut the fuck up.” After the two went outside, witnesses testified Shaver asked the victim, “Where do you want it?” and then pointed a .22 pistol at his cheek and pulled the trigger. Shaver claimed self-defense and was acquitted. “I am very sorry about the incident,” Shaver said afterward. “Hopefully, things will work out where we become friends enough so that he gives me back my bullet.”

'Billy Joe Shaver's recently concluded trial has to rank pretty far up there on the legendary Waco singer-songwriter list of exploits. As you may have read, Shaver was acquitted late Friday afternoon of aggravated assault charges surrounding a parking-lot shooting outside a Lorena bar in March 2007. No one, least of all Shaver, is disputing that the author of "Old Five and Dimers Like Me," "Black Rose" and "Georgia on a Fast Train" shot Billy Bryant Coker
after the two got crossways at Papa Joe's Texas Saloon. But the 70-year-old musician was able to convince a McLennan County jury, which deliberated for less than two hours Friday afternoon, that he acted in self-defense.

TheAustin American-Statesman
reported that Shaver told prosecutor Beth Toben he confronted Coker because to leave the bar without doing so would be "chicken shit."

Nice anecdote:

When he took a taxi during a recent Edinburgh Film Festival, the driver was amazed that he could put a name to every street they passed. "How come?" he asked. "As a boy I used to deliver milk round here," he said. "So what do you do now?" That was rather harder to answer.
