Book about boy who gets a box from grandfather with various clues (sort of scavenger hunt for the boy’s birthday), which includes movie memorabilia as well as sports memorabilia about the life of Buster Crabbe, famed actor and swimmer, most notable for his roles as Flash Gordon and Tarzan.

I read it in mid-80s; it was a hardcover and I can’t remember what was on the jacket on the book but the book itself was red.
