Rating a book before it is even published.

Okay, so maybe it's just me, but why/how can people rate books when the book hasn't even been published yet?! I mean, what's the point?!?!?! It just messes with the rating system which should be based on how well the book was written and/or how much one enjoyed it. I get that a lucky few peeps get to read advance copies, (Darynda, please call me ;) ;) ) but in many cases the ratings are given WAY before the cover or blurb are even made official.
Am I alone on this whiny, moany boat? Or does anyone else think the Goodreads rating system needs to be updated? Goodreads admin, I hope you read this!

Those people rating the books before they are published are usually the ARC teams for those authors. And, they aren't messing with the rating system...they are part of it. They rate the books based on their opinion of the book.
I hope by now you've come to understand how and why some people rate books before they are released. They are from ARC (advanced readers copy) and sometimes beta readers. They most definitely help the rating system as it is there so readers can express their opinions of the books regardless of how it when they received it. ARC readers actually help encourage people to buy and read the book and leave a review themselves. Every review helps the author. So don't worry about the authors or the rating system. It's working exactly as it should.
Not necessarily. I have come across a lot of reviews that are based solely on the fact that the book is going to exist. Most are "Yea-another-book-is-coming-5-stars" but there are some single star reviews from people irritated with the authors. These are *not* ARC reviews. And I agree with OP, it irritates the hell out of me.
