robtion As a fan of dystopian fiction I am always on the look out for more. Please give any recommendations here, not only novels but video games, movies, board games, anything.

I have read 1984, Brave New World, Make Room Make Room, and am reading Borne currently. Fahrenheit 451 is on the to do list. I couldn't get through A Clockwork Orange.

I would highly recommend the following:

Video games:
Inside - excellent atmosphere, clever puzzles.
Beholder - Heavy 1984 inspiration, nice art design.
We Happy Few - Full release in 2018, Dystopian 1960's England where everyone is hooked on happy drug Soma...err 'Joy'.
BioShock(1-3) - No God's or Kings, only Man.

Anime:
Psycho Pass - Great premise, interesting story and setting, references to 1984.

Board Game:
Euphoria - A fun board game with both Brave New World and 1984 themes.

Amnah Perhaps his Orwell's other novel, 'Animal Farm'?

Steven-John Tait Hi. I'm also into dystopian.

Read We by Zamyatin. It's the father of Brave New World and 1984. I also have The Sleeper Awakes and The Iron Heel. I still need to read these. Both, I'm pretty sure, are dystopian books.

Happy reading,
Steven-John

I forgot about We, it is on my to read list. Haven't heard of the others though. Thanks.

robtion Forgot to mention 'Black the fall', another totalitarian state indie video game with a great art style and bleak setting.

Bilguun Fahrenheit 451,
Equilibrium (2002) it's actually based on 1984. You can see it from the entire plot displaying totalitarian society in which authorities watching and controlling every single individual. There are also similarities in word choice such as thought police-clerics, thought crime - sense offense Big brother - Father, Ministry of ... - Palace of ... etc

Madeleine Greenhouse I loved the anime Psycho Pass; such an intriguing story line. In the realm of video games I would recommend Horizon Zero Dawn. It's set in an apocalyptic world of machines and primitive human tribes. I loved it, but if you're more into puzzle games then you may not enjoy it. Can't think of any books though.

Yes psycho pass was really great. Dystopia with a unique Japanese flavour.

I finished Horizon Zero Dawn at release. Amazing game with a surprisingly deep story. I really like the justification for the robot dinosaurs running around. Very clever. I still need to play the expansion though (Frozen Wilds).

Thanks, the name sounds familiar, I will look into Equilibrium.

Madeleine Greenhouse Definitely one of the best games I've played. I haven't played Frozen Wilds yet either, but I definitely intend to. The story is way too good to let go. Do you have any other games recommendations?

I could recommend dozens of games, maybe hundreds. Depends what you are looking for. What types of games do you like?

For story The Last of Us is amazing (heavy though). Uncharted The Lost Legacy is good(Indiana Jones type adventure). The Last Guardian or Shadow of the Colossus both artistic and great. The Witcher 3 is a deep fantasy rpg.

Madeleine Greenhouse I've actually already played all the ones you recommended. I definitely prefer story driven games, Last of Us had such an amazing story line even if it was a bit heavy. The Witcher 3 took me longer to get through though because of the more complicated game play. I tend to keep things simple.

Story driven it is then.

Have you tried Telltale or Quantic Dreams game. Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls are great. The upcoming Detroit Becoming Human is also looking very promising.

The Wolf Among Us is my favourite Telltale game but all of theirs are good I believe.

The Order 1886 is pretty amazing(I loved it) though there are some plot holes and there is no conclusive ending.

Alien Isolation is a must play if you like the original movie from 1979. Great atmosphere and story.

The Bioshock games also have an interesting setting and story.

There are many others but a lot are older (last gen e.g. Mass Effect 1-3) so not sure how gameplay, graphics etc hold up now.

Duane *Someplace* on this confounded site, there's a thread on dystopian novels...

But I can't find it (of curse)...

There's one, "Dhalgren" (sp?) that probably belongs on any list of dystopian horror tales...

Thanks for the recommendation, looks interesting, I have added it to my to read list.

message 16: by Dee (last edited Mar 16, 2018 11:41PM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Dee The Machine Stops - EM Forester's dystopia that predicted so many things.

The Wind-Up Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi - dystopia and biopunk

The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins

The Giver series by Lois Lowry

The Handmaid's Tale - Margaret Atwood

I am a fan of dystopia as well as cyberpunk, biopunk, apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic (similar to dystopia but without formed governments or controls), and steam punk.

BTW if you want a great sci-fi, try the series called Entire and the Rose by Kay Kenyon. It's a 4 book story that I found hard to put down and I was so sad when it ended.

Animal farm is really a great one, after 1984 it should be the one that you should go for.

Michael Zuniga If you like Animal Farm, you might also enjoy Watership Down. I don't know if it qualifies as Dystopian, per se, but it does have dystopian elements.

Chelsey Books:
I would start with Wool. The entire Silo series is great, a true gem for dystopian fans.

Other Dystopians worth a read:
The Giver
Hell Divers
The Broken Earth trilogy (Starts our more fantasy but ends up having some good dystopian feels)
The Maze Runners series
The Hunger Games seres
The Handmaids Tale
Oryx and Crake
The Australia trilogy
Children of Time (More sci-fi with a splash of dystopia)
Delirium trilogy
Divergent trilogy

Video Games:
The Last of Us - Hands down my favorite post apocalyptic game

I also enjoyed playing the Fallout games and the Bioshock games.

Bijan Amiri Hi.I want to add the Movie " Mortal Engines" and the Game " Metro:Exodus " ,and an Old PC Game " Dark Earth" a 1997 post-apocalyptic action-adventure game which was really a good example of Dystopia ,The game was developed by Calisto Entertainment.and you could walk through a Mysterious locations and spend a lot of time with Chthonians of underworld!

Karen I love Margaret Atwood's Maddadam trilogy.
