Plaid Holden | 2 comments Okay so I don't really think I'd care about this book, but it's driving me nuts that I can't remember the title so I can look it up.

Anyway, the book is about a boy and his sister who live in a society where they have to wear masks, and where music is deemed illegal. Though the boy ends up getting so obsessed with music that he climbs up a hill and starts making noises and then gets arrested. Then a council throws him into a simulation where they show a jewish boy getting killed, supposedly because of his flute but really the jewish boy was a scapegoat for other problems.

Plus a recurring thing the society tries to state is that there are "One Thousand Choices".

Anyway this was from middle school book class, which was how I came to know of this to begin with. But if anyone does actually know of this book that'd be great.

Tab's suggestion of The Cure by Sonia Levitin matches your description.

"All wear masks and are identified by a number (very reminiscent of the concentration camps...and fitting in nicely with the anti-semitic themes of the book); and due to his musical ability Gemm is ruled a deviant who is either to be forcibly recycled or "cured."" | "When the boy Gemm 16884 somehow feels moved to make music, an extinguished art, he is given a choice between being ""recycled"" (killed) or sent into virtual reality to experience the bad old days as a cure for his deviant desires." | "He is put through an alternate reality (in this case an actual historical reality) in which he is a Jew living in Strasbourg during the pestilence of 1349."

Quote from the book: "So many choices! He thought: A thousand choices! It occurred to him briefly that only twelve masks were ever available. Whenever a new model was introduced, an old one was recalled."
