Lindsay | 546 comments The three year time jump was a little bit of a surprise but I guess it had to happen at some point. It's not a first with this series either.

These books have been quite formulaic since book two. Action- packed start followed by military background and down time with a major battle or series of battles to finish it up. I'm not complaining; it's book six, clearly the formula is working for me.

That being said, this feels like the formula on steroids. The start was the most minimal of action sequences and the background felt heavier than most.

I did appreciate the parallel of the metal-fatigue dropship accident and the mental-fatigue that Andrew is facing with his PTSD.

And seeing humanity finally getting its act together is very cool. I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop though. I think Andrew and Hallie might be too.

Suzanne | 1582 comments Yeah I was somehow expecting the whole training commitment deal for this first part - but that's ok. I guess the formula works on me too.

I agree about it being formulaic, but still enjoyable. I guess this is the last book, so I'm hoping for a good wrap-up in the second half.

The discussion of PTSD is something I think is unusual for a military book. Obviously Andrew has a lot of pent up anger to deal with.

Suzanne | 1582 comments Yeah I'm glad the author decided to address the PTSD issue because really, how could he not have it!?

Lindsay | 546 comments Why do you think it's the last book?

That's not what I was thinking when I went in, and it's not the impression I have after finishing it.

I read that somewhere it was either the end of the series or maybe the end the arc with the alien race. I'm not sure now that you're telling me otherwise.
