Noiresque | 3 comments I am hoping that the readers/teachers/parents here can give some recs for a young-at-heart young lady in her late teens who is just learning English over the past year, colloquially and in social conversation classes.

She has read Charlie And The Chocolate Factory and Murder At The Vicarage by Agatha Christie out loud with assistance and Matilda by herself. At the moment Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is doable by herself but it is a touch too dense and slow-going and she's getting frustrated.

If I can recall my childhood, that would mean she's too advanced for The Sweet Valley Twins but might struggle a little with Sweet Valley High by herself.

The problem is there isn't anyone to read with her for the next year or so, so I'd be grateful for suggestions for stuff she can tackle on her own. For reference, She liked watching Pretty Little Liars, Riverwood, 13 Reasons Why and the Wonder Woman film (I had to read the new Josie and the Pussycats comics with her because it was a bit too meta/post-modern/ironic) and crime shows.

Natalia Heaney | 22 comments I was going to suggest Harry Potter, because I know some ESL people who had English-learning success with it, but I'm not sure what else to suggest. I taught ESL - I should have more ideas!

Maybe anything with a movie tie-in will help. If she goes in knowing something about the plot, it's going to be easier to figure out what's on the page when she's confused. People tend to pick up vocabulary faster when they know the context.

The Sweet Valley-type book *are* too young for an older teen, but from the point of view of learning the language, they might actually be helpful.

Maybe go to NetGalley and get some ideas from there. It's the website bloggers get their review books from, but you can browse the Middle Grade and Young Adult sections without being registered.

I see you're in Australia. Maybe something by someone like John Marsden? (I just saw the cover of the first Tomorrow book - Tomorrow, When the War Began - and thought it might suit).

Zhye (zhyegoatt) | 29 comments I don't know what her first language is, but maybe find her something written by an author that shares that language/heritage and uses both languages in the book to keep her interested like When Dimple Met Rishi or The Epic Crush of Genie Lo
