The Ship Who Sang & other books by Anne McCaffrey might fit the bill.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 4367 comments All my shop & barn fluorescents are swapped out for LED lights now. Finished them up last night & brought in the good bulbs & ballasts for a guy here at work. He's a member of a dancing group that can use them for their building. I hate tossing good stuff, so giving it to a good cause is the next best thing.

I was getting some hay & the Purple Martin houses out of the big barn yesterday afternoon when Tango, Erin's horse, started eating the hood of my truck. I have no idea why, but I suddenly heard this horrible scraping & there are bright white streaks in the dark blue paint where his teeth peeled it off. Bugger. I yelled at him & he ran off. I did a couple of more bales & he came back. Things escalated & I finally wound up hitting him with a spring rake. That drove him off long enough for me to finish loading the truck. I had to call Marg out to put him in a stall so he wouldn't help me unload the hay into the horse barn.

The Purple Martin houses are up. The scouts usually come by toward the end of the month. With the mild winter we've had, they might be a bit early. I need to go around the fields & replace/fix the bluebird houses. Should have done that already.

Stu Gibeau (stumanfu) | 31 comments I’m an avid birder too. Nice to hear your list of swamp birds. I’m guessing you’re in the UK. I have 150 species I’ve seen from my yard and 332 species for North Carolina.

message 806: by Buck (new)

Buck (spectru) | 900 comments I saw an unfamiliar bird at our feeder today. Only got a glimpse. Looked like a house finch, but we are maybe 300 miles outside their range.

message 807: by [deleted user] (new)

lol

message 808: by Deb (new)

Deb Omnivorous Reader | 173 comments This is turning into a bird group! I too enjoy watching birds. I participate in the Australian backyard Bird count and enjoy spotting birds in the region. We get some good migratory ones as well as the yer round residents. Though we do have a lot of problems with pest species.

message 809: by [deleted user] (new)

lmao,
......I hate birds...,they scare me.....

message 810: by [deleted user] (new)

when I was little at the zoo when you came in you got to get a picture with a bird on your shoulder. well one time it got scared and clawed my shoulder really bad, so bad it left a scar. I have been scared of birds ever since. I absolutely dread bird shows.

message 811: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't remember. I was like 6 or 7

message 812: by [deleted user] (new)

AHHHH I HATE GEESE!!! I WAS CHASED BY THE FUCKERS WHILE I WAS FEEDING THE DUCKS!!!

message 813: by [deleted user] (new)

Geeze. Sorry. you never cared before

message 814: by [deleted user] (new)

I said one word. Sorry then, I'll be a nun again.

Gregg Wingo (gwingo) Breanna wrote: "I said one word. Sorry then, I'll be a nun again."

God, I hope not!

message 816: by [deleted user] (new)

lol Gregg, that's just me and my boyfriend having our pointless fights and making fun of my religion.

message 817: by Gregg (new)

Gregg Wingo (gwingo) Keep him guessing!

message 818: by [deleted user] (new)

I do

message 819: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 4367 comments I work for a small manufacturing company, so only a few people can work from home. They've been doing OK, but things have slowed up a lot. That's nice because I have a new server which is requiring a lot of changes. Much easier without users bugging me.

I mowed our back yard for the first time yesterday evening. It was barely dry enough after 2 days of rain, but it needed it. Patches were over 6" tall & it was in the low 70s. It's supposed to be dry this weekend, but it's 37 out now & not supposed to get out of the 40s today. Even chillier tomorrow. Too cold to be sitting on a mower.

Has anyone seen Fort?

It is a bit like that.

message 824: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm leaving this group

message 825: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 4367 comments When I see a person leaving, I like to PM them to find out why, but I can't do that if your profile is set to private. I'm not going to get into a discussion about it publicly, though. If you have a problem that I might be able to help with, please feel free to PM me.

message 826: by [deleted user] (new)

its just best that I leave. nobody wants me here anymore. not even my boyfriend. I think he is. I don't know anymore

message 827: by [deleted user] (new)

Just to let you know it wasn't Fort. He's incredible. The most amazing guy I have ever met. He didn't do anything he shouldn't have. I was too clingy and didn't give him space. Don't be upset at him. It was me.

For me, being told to lay on the couch all weekend is heaven, except now that I am told that I have to stay in, I want to go out. Go figure.

message 836: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 619 comments I have lots of books, thank goodness. Ontario has been under stay at home except for essential reasons since March 17. I'm glad it's spring so that at least I can go for a walk in the neighbourhood.

message 837: by Leo (new)

Leo | 786 comments we have a double programme now: both working from home and teaching our kids at home. it is prettig exhausting. but I guess this is going to continue for months.

message 839: by [deleted user] (new)

There are. But there is also a school that I use. They record their lessons and put them in a DVD. That's what I do.

message 840: by [deleted user] (new)

I DO!!!! I LOVE KHAN ACADEMY!!!! IT'S SOMETHING I DO FOR HOMEWORK!!!!

message 841: by [deleted user] (new)

Uh, yeah.

message 842: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 4367 comments I don't mind being isolated at home since that's pretty much what I do, anyway. I worked hard for 50 years to buy my farm & build my shop. Now that I have them, I'm busy with them except when I go to work. Since we live over 20 minutes from town, we always keep a good stock of everything we need, too.

My biggest change & frustration is that I the small area for my home computer, so only have room for 1 monitor & computer which can get pretty cramped. At work I use a 6' table for my desk with 2 monitors & 5 computers under it. Access to the server rack just requires turn of my chair. Turning my chair & scooting a few feet gives me access to half a dozen other computers.

The other big challenges are the weather (gorgeous!) & the dogs. Lily, my Pointer, doesn't understand that I've been working. She thinks it's a weekend & we should be out working on the farm so she beats me with her tail & keeps telling me it's time to go out. Thankfully today is the weekend.

message 843: by [deleted user] (new)

Awww your dog just wants to play

Buck (spectru) | 900 comments We have been setting record highs. 94 yesterday. Before that our earliest 90 and first in March. It was forecast to be 93 today.

I moved my consulting business home three years ago. So working from home is not a new thing for me.

I am a member of an artists cooperative. I worked my thrice-monthly shift at our gallery last Saturday. It's hasn't re-opened. Beaches are closed - and it's college spring break. Sanibel has prohibited accommodation (vacation) rentals. Toll booths are taking non-touch payment only.

We've been through hurricanes before. I'd rather do that instead.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 4367 comments 94! Wow! We were supposed to get up to 73 today, but I never remembered to look. My wife thinks it might have hit 80. Sure felt warm. I put on shorts for the first time this year. Got a lot done, mostly cleaning out the overhang of my shop. Plenty more to do on that tomorrow. I need to build some shelves & hang stuff better. Too much necessary junk.

I tend to stockpile stuff, just in case. It works out well sometimes. The lamp at my wife's end of the couch went out & I had a replacement lamp holder in stock. When I needed a reel for fencing wire to fit on the 3 point hitch of my tractor, a new one was over $400. I made one up out of scraps in a few hours. BUT some of that stuff has grown whiskers. Of course, if I get rid of it, I'll probably need it a week later...

I never wear shorts or tee shirts, long pants, long sleeves always. I wouldn't have noticed that it was particularly hot today if it weren't on the local newscast. I do notice when it drops much below 70 though. brrr. If it drops below 50, I probably won't go outside.

message 847: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 4367 comments I went into work today for what I thought was going to be a few quick chores. I left 5 hours later completely drained of all mental energy. Sheesh! If something could go wrong, it did. For instance, I rebooted a server only to have the main UPS on the rack get a bad battery. I just had to pull the battery pack & run it over to Interstate Battery to get new ones swapped in, but it was an hour worrying if we'd have a power glitch that would take down servers.

On the bright side, I've gotten the overhang of my shop all cleaned up & ordered properly. That's been a 5 day project that was long over due. The biggest chore was ordering all my scrap metal. I built some racks & shelves so now I can see what I have. I also built a shelf for my gardening stuff which is also the area where I keep the grease guns, oil, oil wrenches, & such. Yes, weird, but it works; better now that I have good shelves to separate them. It's ugly getting seeds mixed into grease.

I also found out that I finally have enough good 5 gallon buckets! That's a first in my lifetime. I know, I get excited about weird things, but simple pleasures...

Oddly, I am not very worried. I take precautions and generally never get sick. Germs jump on me and die. 8^)

Same. I rarely get sick
