Amanda Orick (amandaorick) | 7 comments Are we reading the short story Rage or the novel the Shining next? just want to make sure I get what I need at the bookstore! :)

Great question, Amanda. I checked, and actually The Shining came out in January of 1977, where Rage was released in September.

So we'll do The Shining and then Rage next month. I've updated the bookshelf.

Also in February, we're reading Strange Weather by Joe Hill, just FYI.

Todd | 7 comments Is everybody downloading this one? I believe Rage has been out of print for quite some time and aside from collections, is hundreds of dollars for a copy.

message 5: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 1469 comments I have the Bachman books, which has rage the long walk running man and road works. maybe you can find a copy of the Bachman books which is cheaper.

message 6: by Monique (new)

Monique Chambers | 93 comments I want Bachman so bad 😂

message 7: by Femmy (new)

Femmy | 195 comments I have The Bachman Books, too. I'd completely forgotten that I had it, probably because I never read it, but when I was rummaging my bookshelf to find Carrie, I found it. And I was so happy that it includes Rage.

By the way, before I found the book, I checked out the Amazon page for it and saw that the current Kindle edition only has three books in it, no Rage. So when you're going to buy a copy of The Bachman Books, be sure to check whether it has three or four books in it.

Nancy (paper_addict) | 942 comments Look for used copies of The Bachman Books. I have seen them at places like Half Price Books.

https://www.hpb.com/products/the-bach...

Two on their website right now but I have seen them in their stores. So if you have one near you, I would go check.

Try the library as well. I bet they have the original version of The Bachman Books.

Don’t forget Amazon sells used copies as well:

I read Rage back in the 80's and didn't really care for it.
I have the audio-book now, but don't care to listen it again.
I found it interesting, but since it wasn't horror, I dismissed it.
I found the controversy and King self-banning it ridiculous.
I will probably skip re-reading this one with you guys. And since it's one of King's shorter works, I really don't think it deserves to be featured for a full calendar month.

message 10: by Todd (new)

Todd | 7 comments Thanks for the acquisition tips everybody. I'll keep my eyes peeled for a Bachman collection...my current White Buffalo...

King got upset when someone found a copy of Rage in the locker of a kid who had just committed a mass shooting. That would bother me too.

Kandice | 4387 comments This is short, true, but no less worthy of a month's discussion. We all read at different paces, and this has a ton of fodder for debate and discussion. I have a HB and PB, but know it's hard to find now. I hope everyone is able to get a copy. It's well worth the read and especially topical right now.

As a last resort you can also find it on youtube in the audiobooks.

thanks for that. I wasn't going to even try as copies were starting at 75 Euro. I am bit annoyed because I think I had a copy of the original Bachman bindup that included it and it got dumped from my parent's house recently. I work for a Young persons charity and we could at least of auctioned it off on ebay the charity or something.

message 17: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 1469 comments Actually you might be able to find a copy in one of the charity shops, I know I am always looking in the charity shops for old books. I normally look in the British Heart foundation and St Nicholas Hospice because they have done so much for my daughter that there is no way I could ever hope to pay them back.

Dawn | 7 comments Picked up The Bachman Books by Richard Bachman at my library. Includes: Rage, The long Walk, Roadwork and The running man.

message 21: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 1469 comments Cool you managed to get one of the earlier published versions of the book that has all four stories.

Vintage 1985.

It appears to be just a different cover!

They are just different editions so they have different covers and different publishing dates and usually different publishers.

message 28: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (paper_addict) | 942 comments This is odd, I could have sworn we had a thread for March under the second round for Rage, I don’t see it now and it’s not on the main page at the top for the group reads. It still has The Shining.

message 29: by Maria Hill (new)

Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) | 61 comments So what is the is April ? The Stand? Night Shift? Or am I really confused and it's something else?

mrbooks | 1469 comments I concur on the 2nd read I know I saw something for Rage, but now I can't. So Hear is my question Has anyone seen the link between Rage and the Stand? And again with the blue Chambray work shirt, Charlie is in the loop on it.

I only got close to halfway through my re-read last night. I’ll let you know if I come across anything related to the stand. So far, I ddint notice anything.

Nancy (paper_addict) | 942 comments Maria wrote: "So what is the is April ? The Stand? Night Shift? Or am I really confused and it's something else?"

That is a good question since The Stand has two editions so two release dates. Most new readers can’t get ahold of the original edition. I have both. 😋

message 34: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks | 1469 comments I think we should go with the stand. Stephen King didn't want to edit the original edition but was forced to so the unabridged is the original that never was. Who said editors know what they are talking about, LOL.

message 35: by Jenny (new)

Jenny a.k.a....Jenny from the block | 725 comments I thought the 1978 version was much better than the extended version which was kind of blown out

message 36: by Monique (new)

Monique Chambers | 93 comments im finishing dt wizard and glass and city of bones the on to book 4 in dt and book 2 in city of bones

message 37: by Maria Hill (new)

Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) | 61 comments I read the extended edition of the Stand when it was brand new in paperback (1990?) and have reread a couple of times since. I don't think reading the edited version would feel right - it would be like listening to an abridged audiobook.

Though I have read plenty of reviews stating the shorter version is better,

message 38: by Summer (new)

Summer (paradisecity) | 360 comments If we’re reading the uncut version of The Stand, it might be nice to have two months for it rather than just one. It is rather hefty.

Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) | 61 comments Posted to the other thread as well. I just found a really good condition mass market paperback of the Bachman books that included Rage in a second hand shop. Only two Euros - i have seen similar copies on sale on ebay for about 75 - so delighted.

I was looking to see if they had the originally published version of The Stand Katherine- when I found Rage.

I will probably read and listen to The Stand next month. I have the uncut audio and paperback of it and it is a bit of a TOME. But it's one of my favourites - so that's okay. :)
