They fall in love.
His mother objects.
His mother disappears..."
Like Gone Girl, but Gone Mother instead. Intriguing.

Ideas abound in short stories - usually by authors who just need to get them out of their head and do not have the stamina to turn them into a novel. I recently wrote a short story with this as the theme because I didn't have the stamina to make it into a novel.

Look into the history of the industrial revolution - there are many under-developed themes there.

I kinda had the same reaction. The things I write are very personal, usually inspired by some small yet memorable event in my life. It would feel weird to give the ideas away to someone else. But, we all work differently. If someone prefers to get their inspiration from other authors and other authors are willing to share ideas, cool.

Absolutely! I have so many ideas for stories and never enough time to develop them, hence my resort to short stories. I would love to collaborate with a writer to produce more.

I need to get a sign made up which says: Caution, writer in area, all people, places, items and words may be written into a story.
One of mine came from sitting and watching a sunset., two from newspaper articles, one for a book on the US Marshals, one while I was on vacation with my family.
If that doesn't work, try fleshing out a new character which interests you...the past, important events in their life, why anyone would be interested in them and what situation would stress them and pull them out of their comfort zone into an interesting situation. Get into the person's head and emotions. Become them. You can actually end up building a whole novel around that.
I've used all the above in classes as writing exercises. The character one is great as you really get into the emotions and when you build that situation, you see other things coming at you.
