SOLVED. Fantasy YA Series Set in world based on Asian Customs. [s]

Hi there,

About 15- 20 years ago, I started reading a series about a young asian boy who was part of a specific "tribe" and was taken from his family. The series followed him as he aged, and he eventually planned to take on another man in a different tribe. The tribes were of differing power and influence, and he came from one of the lower ones.

I don't remember much of the series, but I think the covers were different colours based on where the stories were set - I think one cover was really white, covered in snow, etc. This could be a red herring though.

I do remember that the boy stopped speaking for a long time, and developed super hearing, only speaking for the first time when somebody was trying to break into the house he was staying in.

I never finished the series as my city libraries are notorious for never having the book in the series that I want to read when I want to read it, and I am also notorious for being useless at following up on my reserved items, and I would like to re-read it and finish the series.

Tales of the Otori series by Lian Hearn? The story seems to fit, the first novel was published in 2002 and there are different covers, some of them in different colours:
