Netanella Hello Hipnoticraqs!

Netanella This thread is a buddy read with Hipnoticraqs.

I am guilty: I started the book last night and then promptly passed out. Not that the book was dull, but I had had too little sleep and too much wine.

I enjoyed the opening chapter, about a young girl who is chosen to be taken by the local Wizard for a 10 year service. The girls he usually takes are the best and the brightest, and when tbey return after 10 years, they are changed and don't stay in the village long.

Our young girl is confused when she is taken and her more beautiful and talented friend is not. The Wizard is aloof, and seems to want nothing of her except timely meals and a kempt appearance. Both of which, it seems, she struggles with.

Still too early in the book to form an opinion. Nice writing style, however.

Netanella “If you don’t want a man dead, don’t bludgeon him over the head repeatedly,” the Dragon snapped.

hIpnoticraQs I'm guessing she'll be the one tribute that never leaves.

hIpnoticraQs Falling in love soon probably 😍

Netanella What do you think of the book so far?

I must confess that I've been reading along and totally forgot to post! So I'm probably about 70% done.

Agnieszka is an interesting heroine, because she is so atypical. She is plain, prone to disaster, and mumbles. I enjoyed the opening chapters when she just arrives at the wizard's tower and is fearful that the Dragon is feeding off her energy. I also enjoyed the slow relationship that builds.

The magic system is interesting - most of the court wizards are technically trained, and their magic seems to derive from memorized incantations and specific gestures. Agnieszka, on the other hand, seems to have an intuitive knack for magic, a feeling that either works or doesn't. It's interesting to see this difference in mechanical versus natural magic, particularly since the book's antagonist is the organically evil Wood that is encroaching on the peasants in the Valley.

Netanella I made it to the hot wizard love scene...and then...zombies!!

OMG I was about to give up on this book. I'm at the part when They're in the forest to rescue the queen. I'll continue.

Netanella Ha ha ha! I knew you were struggling with this one, so I threw that in there. There is hot wizard sex and zombies, just not in the same room at the same time! :)~

hIpnoticraQs It's cool when somebody gets you. I'll restart tomorrow.

Netanella I finished. I found it to be a wonderful, magical book. In honesty, I hoped this would get you out of your book slump. I don't think I picked one to suit your tastes, though :(

hIpnoticraQs I'm liking the story, I just have an attention span

hIpnoticraQs Deficiency. I'll press on though, it's not bad. If you like it I'm sure it's worth reading.
