Hello everyone! I read this book when I was about 11 years old. The story is set in the Middle Ages, in a small village. The protagonist is a widowed woman with two young children. One day a fabric salesman comes to the door, which she welcomes into her house, without knowing that she was sick of bubonic plague. Because of this man the village begins to get sick. I remember that both the protagonist's children die. The biggest one had a bubo in his armpit. The head of the village decides to put all the inhabitants in quarantine, without more contact with the outside. In the village there is also an herbalist who is accused of witchcraft. The head of the village has a daughter that the protagonist gives birth to. At the end of the book she runs away with the child and becomes the preferit woman of a harem of a rich Arab.

I second Year of Wonders, all the details - the fabric salesman was a tailor, but he brought in new fabric to the village. The herbalist that the village thinks is a witch is there too.
