Maiko-chan [|] Starting a buddy read of Imago with Tenae here so others may feel free to hop in and join us.

Maiko-chan [|] Haven't started this one yet, oops. Spent my time focusing on reading Heartless and those add-in's. Looks like I'm a bit ahead of you in Heartless (*gasp*) so I'll start Imago soon. Is it a pretty easy/quick read like Heartless is? If so don't worry, I'll catch up soon XD

Maiko-chan [|] Finally started this (evidently ch1 starts at 2%...huh).

...just so you know.
Oh god. No. How often does it break the fourth wall like this?
Sometimes I can handle books with MCs talking to the reader, but only if it's brief. Too much of the above and small asides pointing things out to the reader directly and it feels like bad fanfic to me.

Maiko-chan [|] I shall brace myself for their inevitable infatuation!

Maiko-chan [|] MC snorts nearby the first time and love interest hears it, but second time LI doesn't hear him even tho MC is close enough to overhear his despondency about not having a vehicle.

I want to like this book. I want to like this $3 book.

Maiko-chan [|] Ok I see what you mean. Switched POV and love interest (Lawson) keeps mentally calling first POV (wildlife guy-Jack) "perfect." He's done that 6x before introducing himself.

and yeah this is not a long book at all and reads fast so if you want to continue I'll catch up soon.

Maiko-chan [|] Tenae wrote: "I also can't believe that the dude decided to hop into a stranger's car with no idea who he is."

This, after pointing out how stupid and potentially dangerous it would be to accept the stranger's offer of a lift. He literally says that the stranger could "[turn] out to be a serial killer."

Maiko-chan [|] Dude!! I'm gonna start keeping track of how many times Lawson calls Jack perfect wtf??? This is hilarious!

Maiko-chan [|] *wheezing noises* this book!

I swear I need Lawson to get a fucking backbone already omggg. He calls himself genius but doesn't even think before going off with a stranger, focusing solely on his muscles and physique, and then asserts himself and his IQ and speech, but backtracks immediately after when Jack uses a big word to defend his opinion about dragonflies "defy[ing] logic."

This. This is beautiful.

Maiko-chan [|] .

Jack's perspective:
He appeared to be the picture of perfection
it begins

Maiko-chan [|] I mean if you want? I'm 8% in so it'll take me a bit but not too long I think

Maiko-chan [|] bless this book

srsly what if you read a book where that happened for no reason besides shock value?

Maiko-chan [|]
"How can he trust you if you've only just met today?"
-Jack, to Lawson (11%)

And neither of them make the connection to themselves.

Maiko-chan [|]
He spoke of his own merits without ego.
-Jack on Lawson (11%)

BITCH PLZ!

You're obviously pretty smart."
"Above average IQ, one could say
-Jack, then Lawson (6%)
"The professor is a smart man."
"But not as smart as you."
"No, he's not."
-Lawson, Jack, Lawson (7%)

I'm surprisingly enjoying this book too but goddamn. Like you said, really not one to take seriously.

Maiko-chan [|] They began calling the vehicle a truck but now it's just being called an ute. That works for chapters from Jack's perspective, but less so from Lawson's since he hasn't heard Jack call it that. And sure he's a genius, but still.

Maiko-chan [|] Ah ok. It just seemed out of place for it to call the vehicle a truck one time before both characters exclusively call it an ute.

It's certainly not anything overthetop, but it is there. Which is fine, esp in moderation. But I'm calling Jack out on acting like he doesn't see it when he's done nothing but observe Lawson this whole time.

24% in now btw

Maiko-chan [|] Alright I know it's a joke and he's not being serious but
"Can't say I've ever used dairy spread [butter] as a personal lubricant, but I'm not opposed to trying."
-Jack (29%)

if there is butter or another dairy spread involved in the sex scene istg

Maiko-chan [|] "
It did all sorts of wonderful things to my stomach. It stirred even better things in my groin.
"
(31%)

:l wut?

Maiko-chan [|] 35%, I'm basically there.

So far the Perfection Tally reads at:

Lawson about Jack:7
-Use of perfect in general:4
Jack about Lawson:8

for a total of 19 uses thus far. And that's just for the word perfect, not including all the times they, as you said, wax poetic about each other. Ppl complain about insta-love everywhere but this was pretty close, 100% insta-attraction.

Maiko-chan [|] help I keep getting lost in gif hell, it's detracting from my reading and it's already midnight

book 2 is also $3 so I might get it depending on how well this one ends. reading it has been fun, esp with you XD

Maiko-chan [|] We should definitely do this more often.

Ah ok, then in that case.

Yeah just turned midnight.

Alright, normally I'm all for the whole 'I need you to come for me before I can get off' thing, but yo what?
"pure sex and wonder" -I really doubt that

Maiko-chan [|] 40% in and the Perfection Tally has already escalated to

Lawson about Jack:7
-Use of perfect in general:8
Jack about Lawson:8
-Use of perfect in general:1

for a total of 24. It jumped by 5 for 5%. !!!!

YES that would really spice things up. It'd probably result in Character A trying harder, but it'd be outside the norm and all the better for its unexpectedness.

I thought I was just getting tired but I think you're right.

Maiko-chan [|] *headdesk* yep, you definitely read faster than I do. I'm at 43% now. Planning to finish this chapter before I break from it for an extended period.

But but Tenae, they're sooo perfect and think so highly of each other, and every date has been perfection which highlights just how perfect the other is and how each is unlike anything they've ever known. They've gotta continue gushing at/about each other to get the point across in full, else how are we to know what they mean to each other just two dates in?

srsly their admiration just seeps from the page

Maiko-chan [|]
"What makes you think yours was the only test upon my meeting her?" He raised a daring eyebrow at me. "If I'd have gone to your house and met your dog and it was apparent she was maltrated, I'd have walked away, right then and there, without another word."
Well, I'll be. (44%)

Jack tests Lawson to see what kind of person he is, whether or not his dog judges him to be of a good character. Similarly, Lawson tests Jack, naturally. Why is Jack surprised at this???? He reacts as though he'd expect how he cares for his pet to not factor into how his character can be judged. This is all kinds of not ok, I'm disgusted.

Maiko-chan [|] I feel a little less bad now (kidding, I don't feel bad at all) about my reading speed compared to yours XD

Have you also noticed that, brief tho it may be, the author makes a point of pointing out the side character's nationalities? I noticed Remmy and Nico's nationality, "French and Portuguese" respectively, has been mentioned twice so far. It wouldn't bother me, but done like this
The kid was four and was a better cook than me. I guess that's what happened when your parents, French and Portuguese, were chefs. (49%)
it just feels out of place, an unnecessary detail that doesn't add anything.

Also, don't be surprised, but the Perfect Tally has evolved again and now includes uses of perfect by secondary characters. -_-

Lawson about Jack:7
-Use of perfect in general:9
Jack about Lawson:11
-Use of perfect in general:3
Other characters using the word:2

I'm 53% in and stopping for the night.

Maiko-chan [|] I thought about reading another chapter (probably should have) but after taking a break from shelf stuff I went and marathoned s3 of Rick & Morty. Glad to hear I haven't missed out on anything in this book yet lol

I'll do more reading tomorrow, either of just this where I'll aim to finish it, or this and Heartless. For now I'm gonna try to sleep.

Maiko-chan [|] Reading more of this again, 64% in now.

I looked away from the page for a few mins, went back and reread 4 paragraphs before I realized I was rereading them. That's how memorable this book is.

Maiko-chan [|] 71% in and they're listing collective nouns of animals at each other. On my kindle it lasts for just under a full page. Way too long.

Maiko-chan [|] They wax poetic about each other and drink wine at every opportunity. Ik they've drank water and coffee too, but it still feels like they drink nothing but wine since they bring it up every night together.

Maiko-chan [|] 83%
they just had sex and the word "amazing" has been used 4x. Is this the new 'perfect?'

Maiko-chan [|] 84% and stuff is actually happening. Almost feels like the author was getting bored too.

But all of Lawson's wits are going out the proverbial window. (view spoiler)

Maiko-chan [|] I'm so relieved to say I've finished this, so I won't be reading the second book.

Maiko-chan [|] Perfection tally:

Lawson about Jack:7
-Use of perfect in general:14
Jack about Lawson:13
-Use of perfect in general:8
Other characters using the word:2
Total:44

Use of amazing just after penetrative sex:4
Jack’s butterfly kisses to Lawson’s cheek:4

Maiko-chan [|] I hope you've braced yourself.

Maiko-chan [|] I wanted to wait for you but I wanted to be done more lol

oh noo you're feeling better now right?
