SOLVED. Thriller, 80s (?), Unknown Assassin. Spoiler ahead. [s]

I don't remember the plot of this thriller, only that there is a mysterious assassin - possibly French? - who has never been seen by anyone. All communication goes through his disgusting, fat, drunk, wife. In one scene the protagonist may have sex with her... anyway, it's revealed at the end that SHE is the assassin, not a drunk at all but a genius at disguise, and the idea of her husband is a cover up. I believe the assassin is known as Angel, or something with the word Angel in it. Anyone?

How is it revealed? How does the protagonist (male or female?) make this discovery, since you said that the assassin had never been seen by anyone?

Who is the target of the assassination--the protagonist, or is he/she the bodyguard of the target or a cop of some stripe?

I haven't read this, but I'll be looking for a copy of it when it's ID'ed. I love this kind of thriller. So be sure to bump your thread up every 30 days if it isn't found right away.

Oh - I'm so sorry; I didn't realize! Thanks for fixing it. As I recall, the protagonist is another spy or government agent, maybe... he is on the trail of Angel and discovers it's the wife doing the assassination. It's an amazing reveal. I hope someone can ID it!

Glad you found your book, Meredith. Here's the link - Windmills of the Gods by Sidney Sheldon. Although I couldn't tell from reading the plot summary on Wikipedia, I've seen book reviews that describe the assassin Angel in ways similar to your description.
