I always wanted to read The Street. I think I have that book and a copy of The Narrows here as well. Include me in a discussion.

Carol, I noticed hoopla has both the ebook and audio versions of The Street. I'd like to participate in the BR, but am so overloaded this month there's no way I can easily squeeze it in.
Lata wrote: "Carol, I noticed hoopla has both the ebook and audio versions of The Street. Are you up for a January read and we'll align on exactly when after 1/1? It would be great if you are.
Carol, I've been wanting to read The Street since I first heard of it, probably from you! I would love to take part in this BR after the beginning of the year. I already had it on my list of first books to tackle in 2019.
I just recently added The Street to my TBR list and would love to BR after the beginning of the year as well.

Greetings, Carol...did you have a date set to start The Street? I can join in by the 10th-12th if you’re starting the first of the month. I’m excited about this one.

I am good with Thursday, 10 January. (That first week back at work tends to suck all the oxygen from my reading life.)@Lata, Kathleen, Rosalie, Renee: is the 10th okay? Too late? Thoughts?

The 10th is good with me. I've requested the hard-copy book at my library but I'm pretty far down on a wait list (also I recommended they acquire the ebook, but who knows when that will happen). I may just go ahead and buy a copy.

I think I’m delighted there’s a wait list, but ... sounds good.
January works for me for “Beale Street”. I can probably start the book by the 10th or a little later.
Lata wrote: "January works for me for “Beale Street”. I can probably start the book by the 10th or a little later."Lata, my message was entirely ambiguous, I know. The start-date question was about Ann Petry’s The Street. Are you up for starting that read on the 10th?

Wow, far down on the wait list for this book!? A 72 year old book. I wonder if this is the effect of the Tayari Jones article?

I’m so glad! See you in the discussion thread after the new year!
Is anyone interested in reading If Beale Street Could Talk by James Baldwin sometime in Feb? Sorry if this has already been a group / buddy read.
My local club is reading it in Feb (Feb 9 is the meeting date), so I can participate in an online discussion with you. I'm tabling it to read closer to book club time, so I won't start until late Jan/early Feb to keep details fresh in my head.
Yay Carol! Ok would you prefer to start on the 1st or the 10th of Feb? I’m leaning towards the 10th but OK with an early start as well.

The 10th is better for me, but I don’t want to hold you all up if you’re ready sooner.
Bernie - glad to hear! I’ve got an exam on the 8th so the 10th is definitely better for me too! Ok, this is great, I’ll set up a discussion thread soon :)
I'd like to join in on Beale Street. I'm going to try to put off seeing the movie until after I've read it. I've read a lot of Baldwin's work over the last few years, but haven't read this one yet. I'm trying to catch up on the latest buddy reads. I've read (and loved) The Street recently, so I just started The Black God's Drums.

Glad to have you on board!
Anyone want to do a buddy read of Tonic and Balm? 10 of us have won a free copy through this GR group, so the nine of you are likely suspects :) The publication date is Feb 5, so maybe some time in March?
Over in the 'Read and Recommended' thread a few of us are talking about reading We Cast a Shadow together. Should we buddy read it here soon? My only hesitation is it's really new and maybe hard to get at your library and also might work really well as a group read.
Once again, my public library has been far speedier than I ever expected, and my hold will arrive today or tomorrow, so I'm in! I thought my problem with brand new books would be getting them too late for discussion, but I'm having the opposite problem!
I am interested and I have holds on both We Cast a Shadow and Invisible Man. I'll just have to see if everything comes in at the right time!

You know I have been thinking about We Cast a Shadow and I'd prefer myself to wait for a few months and to discuss when it's eligible for a group read and when more people can participate. I'll probably hold off from participating in a buddy read of it, if one opens. There is a lot going on in this book.

A book that's fallen by the wayside is Tonic and Balm - a couple of months ago several of us won an early copy from the publisher. Would any of the lucky winners or others (it was published on Feb 5) like to set a date for discussion? I'm feeling guilty - but also intrigued, the story sounds tempting.

Nadine, glad you brought it up because I was gonna mention it again. Would sometime in April work for you? I’ll need to read it again even though I think I still have my notes.

Oh, that’s an idea! How about we set a date for April 18th for the entire book to be discussed. I can open a thread if that works for you.
