Caleb Abel (calebabel) | 16 comments I officially have all of the books I'm supposed to read and have sent mine to everyone or confirmed they plan to read on KU.

I don't think I'll be done with all four in the next two weeks or anything, but if you DO finish reading and reviewing all of your assignments early, does that make you eligible to join another group sooner or are you still ineligible to join another group until after April 18th, the final due date? I recall you aren't supposed to be in multiple groups at the same time, but didn't know if there was any way to speed up the process at all.

With Amazon's somewhat creepy networking that somehow even tracks extended Facebook friends and relatives, I feel in desperate need of reviews and am willing and able to read more than 4 books every 3 months to try to get more for my own book in these types of exchanges.

message 68: by Brin (new)

Brin Murray (brintmurray) | 77 comments I don't know what the correct procedure is, but I move to expel Benedict Holmes from the review group. He’s a troll:
his reviews are malicious, inaccurate and deeply stupid.
Saying that you bear no ill will does not make it true.
Cowards hide behind masks.

message 69: by L.N. (new)

L.N. Denison | 1004 comments I shall PM him... and you.

L.N. Denison | 1004 comments Thank you Stacie and C.E for your links, and thank you Brin for your added links.

message 73: by Benedict (new)

Benedict Holmes | 10 comments Interesting. I seem to remember there being a specific guideline in the group about ad hominem attacks, but you just jumped right in there, didn't you?

Well, now. Personally, I find an author who responds to a poor review with such blatant emotionalism to be . . . let's say unprofessional.

Writing is a tough gig. Some people are going to love your stuff, some are going to hate it - that's life. It can't be personal. I'll repeat that, just to be clear. IT CAN'T BE PERSONAL. If you take poor reviews personally, it will wreck you. If you feel the reviewer missed the point, shrug and move on. If there were valid concerns that need to be addressed, do so - then move on.

Write the next book, improve your craft, and push forward.

That being said . . .

I am not going to lie to ANYONE just to make you feel better about yourself. I didn't like your book. Too bad. I am amused how that automatically defines me as a troll ( a term which you need to look up), stupid, a coward, and malicious.

Now you tell me: between the two of us, who has behaved the most maliciously? I would suggest taking a deep breath and re-thinking your decision making paradigm.

L.N. - I'm not interested in getting drawn into some sort of petty squabble, and this is all I intend to say on the subject. As moderator of the group, if you would like me off the round, just say so - but I won't take down my reviews. Despite opinions to the contrary, they were honest and I stand by them.

message 74: by Brin (new)

Brin Murray (brintmurray) | 77 comments Definition from the Urban Dictionary:

"The most essential part of trolling is convincing your victim that either a) you truly believe in what you are saying, no matter how outrageous, or b) give your victim malicious instructions, under the guise of help.
As such, your victim must not know that you are trolling; if he does, you are an unsuccesful troll.

Signs that your trolling is succesful:
*Your victim screaming in all-caps at you.

Signs that your trolling is unsuccesful:
*Your victim identifying you as a troll."

I think that just about covers it.

I'm sure we all read books we don't like fairly frequently as part of this review group, but that doesn't stop most of us reviewing with kindness and respect.

Brin Murray (brintmurray) | 77 comments And PS I didn't post until after Benedict Holmes' review of LN's story, which was also despicable.

message 76: by Benedict (new)

Benedict Holmes | 10 comments Ah, and herein is what likely lies at the heart of the problem.

I'm not here to 'help' you in the way you seem to think I am. I joined this group - and this round - for one purpose only: to write honest reviews in exchange for other honest reviews. That's all. Not to make you feel good about yourself, not to tell you how wonderful you are - none of that. I don't remember reading the guideline that mentioned that I was here to provide emotional validation, but I'll keep checking - just in case.

However, as long as we're throwing out definitions, how about this one?

A bully: an overbearing, browbeating person who is cruel, insulting, or threatening to others.

Is this type of behavior something you habitually engage in with those who disagree with you? Good lord, woman, how do you get through life?

We could keep going round and round about this, but what's the point? You will never forgive me for not liking your book enough and I . . . don't care. And I don't care mostly because of the ridiculous, over the top reaction you had to the review. Assuming your book ever took off, would you personally write and insult every reader who disliked your story? I would certainly hope not, but after seeing your reaction here, I wouldn't be so sure.

If you had contacted me privately, I wouldn't have changed my position, but I would have attempted to explain it in greater detail. I'm afraid you've forever lost that courtesy.

N.B. L.N. wrote to me and thanked me for the honesty of my 'despicable' review. She, at least, knows how to be a professional.

message 77: by L.N. (new)

L.N. Denison | 1004 comments And now this is where it ends. May I remind you, that if you have a problem that you are to PM me, and not air it on this thread. This applies to everyone, not just Brin and Benedict. If there is any further discourse, I will be forced to get offenders removed from the group. Now please, can we let this matter rest and finish the round. Remember to be respectful to each other, and we won't have a problem.

On another note... Gloria, can you PM me regarding another matter?

Caleb Abel (calebabel) | 16 comments My co-author Michael Hecht will be reviewing my Round 4 assignment, Akrad's Children, in order to speed up the process. He had tried to join another group but was advised that co-authors are counted as one and he wouldn't be eligible until my obligations were fulfilled here first.

So since we count as one within the group as a whole, we'll likely just always divvy out the assignments going forward. I had assumed wrongly that we had the option of either divvying out 4 or taking on 4 each to ourselves as long as they were in different rounds.

I have already sent him the .mobi that had been sent to me.

Can he comment the links here himself or do I need to do that part as well if it's too confusing otherwise?
