The main character is technically still a slave until near the end of the book, but she's living essentially like a free woman, and faces challenges of taking ownership of her life similar to what you describe above (although she's quite the spitfire even as a slave, and I would never describe her as shy or scared...)

Thank you for your suggestion, looking it up right now!

This is one of my favorite books, and I really can’t recommend it highly enough. It does have romance, as well, though a lot of it is the main character denying his attraction to the princess’ lady in waiting because she deserves someone better than him. The lady has a different opinion.
There is always the classic The Count of Monte Cristo. He was betrayed by a "friend" and spent many years in prison before his escape.

Spoiler.

What does this mean? You are looking for nonfiction?"
Sorry, Yes. I'm looking for a fiction book. Scifi or Fantasy preferred.

Thank you for the suggestion! I read this a long time ago, (I think for a school project) or recommended by a friend on middle school- I liked. But is a bit of a biographical novel /memoir since is based on a real person.
But I like it I like that he always thrive to be better to fight for his right and take care of his family even if it was hard at times. <3 But its kind heavy, and Im looking for more scifi and Fantasy.

OMG! Thank you for the recommendation!! Its sound intriguing!

OMG! YES! I have read this, have seen the movies and a tv Brazilian novela that had the same story line) its LONG, long and amazing. An Historical but a great book!

Oh wow! That those look dark, and like... its gonna make me cry of agony... (I have a friend who would love these) can you tell me if they have a HEA? That its why I'm looking for a fantasy scify-ish so I can't really link them to reality... and cry even more.
I Actually liked the - Pitch Dark by A.M Wilson and Alex Grayson description but not necessarily for this post.
Thank you for the recommendation !!!!
(I work on a news paper and I see real thing all the time. And want a bit of a relive, that is why I wanted the fantasy, scifi, world.)

I found this book, its amazing!

As a cassandra sangue, or blood prophet, Meg Corbyn can see the future when her skin is cut—a gift that feels more like a curse. Meg’s Controller keeps her enslaved so he can have full access to her visions. But when she escapes, the only safe place Meg can hide is at the Lakeside Courtyard—a business district operated by the Others.
Shape-shifter Simon Wolfgard is reluctant to hire the stranger who inquires about the Human Liaison job. First, he senses she’s keeping a secret, and second, she doesn’t smell like human prey. Yet a stronger instinct propels him to give Meg the job. And when he learns the truth about Meg and that she’s wanted by the government, he’ll have to decide if she’s worth the fight between humans and the Others that will surely follow.

No M/M or F/F, Dark
*Edit -I made a mistake, it was suppose to say "fiction" and not "non-fiction" and I forgot to add that I'm looking for "heart lifting books" and not "heart breaking books". =D
