Read-a-Thon #1 - Announcement

The remaining three read-a-thon dates are tentative. If anyone has thoughts or preference, the mods are always happy to hear them :)

We are pretty loose with the timing though, especially since we have people from different time zones! For example I live in New Zealand, which is 18 hours ahead of EST. So instead of starting the read-a-thon at 6am Monday morning, I'm starting it Sunday night and ending it roughly at the same time I started the next Sunday ;)

LOL, It may change. I have so many challenges set up this year and Im determined to keep myself busy by finishing them all, so I figured out how many books I need to read for each challenge per month and then made out a tentative list based on what I have available, if I can try and go in order, and what fits in with what my other group is reading ( they do three books a month). So far its worked for January. I may have to change things around though depending on the group tasks for the read-a ton. Right now I have 4 books I have to finish in January to stay on track with two of my challenges and then I have one book group read, and I REALLY want to try and fit in The Complete Maus because Im super excited to read it.
We will see if I can keep up this pace.... I don't know.
Cant wait to see the groups and what the different games and such will be for this read a thon. I really loved participating in the one. Good Reads has been like a life line for me lately :-)
Rachelnyc, thanks for pointing that out. The main thinking was that it would potentially fall on spring break for some.
But the mods also discussed having one a bit later so they would be more evenly spaced. We could potentially do something like April 29-May 5 instead.
Open to thoughts!

Would there be an issue in future read-a-thons with everyone just using those times, no matter where we live, rather than having to follow US time? We'll all still have the same amount of time, but then everyone gets to count some good Sunday reading to kick off.
I think the general thought has always been that people can start at different times especially if they're in a different time zone. The hope would just be that you would also stop at the time where it would be 7 total days.
That's more for the actual challenges though and the books you count for them. Obviously if you want to continue to attempt a lot of reading and do the general games then it would be welcome.

How does this work?
If you’re new to read-a-thons, don't worry! They're very simple. You make a commitment to read as much as you can for a set period of time and then you do it. There are often games, challenges, and discussion associated with the event but, for the most part, it's about reading and camaraderie. This read-a-thon there will both an individual and team challenge so get ready!
For our read-a-thon, we'll be committing to read as much as we can for seven days.
How much do I have to read?
There isn’t a set amount you are required to read to participate. Many people choose to set personal goals for themselves but the idea is just to read as much as you can for the week and see what you end up with at the end. It’s all in good fun!
When is this happening?
START:
January 28 @ 12:00 PM (EST)
END:
February 4 @ 11:59 AM (EST)
If you don't live in EST, you can find your start time here.
How do I participate?
All you have to do to join up is to read! But read-a-thons are always much more fun if you participate in the games, join the discussion, and track your progress so we strongly encourage everyone to take part in that.
Where do I participate?
Keep on eye on this folder during the Read-a-Thon for updates, progress reports, and more! They'll start being posted closer to (and after) the event starts.
As usual, we'll be posting new games every 24 hours throughout the event in this folder but you'll have all week to join in if you missed anything. The discussions and games keep the event active and lively so, again, we strongly encourage participation. Come play along and have some fun!
Are there more read-a-thons scheduled in 2018?
Yes! We will be having four, quarterly read-a-thons. They have been tentatively scheduled for:
- March 25-April 1
- August 26-September 2
- November 25-December 2
