Moloch | 3975 comments The profile for Alexandre Dumas "II" https://www.goodreads.com/author/show... son of Alexandre Dumas "I" https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...

has recently been changed from "Alexander Dumas-fils" to just "Alexandre^^Dumas".

The first way was used for a long time

Is it ok this change? Was there a discussion? Or was it better before? Not a criticism but being two famous authors and very easy to be confused, I wanted to be sure

Thanks

Tytti | 173 comments I do think it might get confusing, not all people know French, but on the other hand, I think they are known like that in French, so...

There was no discussion, and I agree that Alexandre Dumas-fils (as he is commonly known, and shows on some covers) is better. Reverted.

Melaslithos | 1360 comments As a French, yes, we always say 'Dumas fils" when we talk about the son, in order to make sure we talk about which Dumas.

You can even see it on most of the French book covers.

It is most commonly "Alexandre Dumas-fils" or "Alexandre Dumas fils" or "Alexandre Dumas, fils"?

Emy (emypt) | 5037 comments Non-hyphenated, as it's just a "junior" designation.

Elizabeth (Alaska) I see in other places Dumas, fils (Dumas comma fils)

Ok, done.

message 9: by Melaslithos (new)

Melaslithos | 1360 comments Non-hyphenated. With or without coma, both are OK (it's not really standardised, as far as I know). Personnally, I'd add a coma.

Moloch | 3975 comments Thank you

Without the "-" there is the usual problem that he's going to be sorted as "fils, Alexandre Dumas", but that's another story (I really hope this will be fixed! :-))
