Mariana Well, I'm back on track with the challenge, I'm only a letter away (V I think) to finish the first and some work to do on the second. In the meantime my baby decided to come into this world about three months before time, showing mommy's rushed spirit and anxiety to live quicky :D So while she spends some time in the ICU I'll be catching up (and milking).

Very well done, Shelley and Bryan!!

The tracking of the challenge hasn't been easy because as it was originally created by Kasey, I can't edit or manage it much. So, I have to go through all pages every time. I may be missing somone! If so, please just post here and let me know! :-)

Also, the message numbers keep shifting! Now they've decreased by four. For example, message 272 is now at position 268. That's beacause of memberes deleting their challenges.

So, now see message 268 on page 6 for both lists of members who have completed the challenge and started a second Alphabet Soup challenge!

There are still plenty of people joining and participating; it is not too late to start! And you can pretty much count any books you've read this year! I still have "Z" to do - I had one lined up for audio but it was too hard to listen to it right now, so my Z is going to have to wait for a little bit until I find another alternative.

Joanna Loves Reading (joannalovesreading) Good job Mariana!

Joanna Loves Reading (joannalovesreading) I believe it was decided that book titles beginning with a numeral were wildcards, but does that include when the number is written out? I.e. “ one” and not 1.

message 383: by Zainab (last edited Oct 26, 2018 04:47AM) (new)

Zainab Al Lawati (zainaballawati) | 224 comments I have a question regarding foreign languages titles.
"Exception 2: If you read a book in a foreign language, how you score the book is up to you - aka you can use the English translation title, or the edition's title. Similar "The" and "A" rules apply (ex. El Cuento de la Criada, or The Handmaid's Tale in Spanish, can count as "H" or "C" depending on which edition you link to your comment.)"

If I have a book that has no English translation and in a language that has different characters that won't necessarily have a matching character in English, which letter should I choose?

For example, I have a story called "الطفل" which translates to "The Child" -but there is no English edition of the book-.
Pronouncing the actual name would be "Al-Tifl", where "Al" is equivalent to "The" hence should be ignored and "Tifl" is as close as possible to the actual pronunciation but not quite, as we have another letter that sounds exactly like "T".

So should I count it as C or T?

message 384: by Marcos (last edited Oct 26, 2018 10:52AM) (new)

Marcos Kopschitz | 1766 comments Very interesting. It just shows that whatever effort we make to cover possibilities, there will always be a situation to surprise us. :-)

I think we can use the "up to you" solution here as well. Maybe C, since there is no equivalent. Any choice you make, you can just note what it was, like

C- "الطفل" which translates to "The Child"

or

T - "الطفل" which would be Al-Tifl"

message 385: by Marcos (new)

Marcos Kopschitz | 1766 comments I don't know Arabic, but there are many words in Portuguese that were acquired when the arabs dominated the Iberian Peninsula.

Especially many with al-, like "almoxarife" (from al-mušrif), "almofada" (from al-miḫaddah), "alcaide" (al-qaid) etc.

That's why I know at least "al". :-)

Examples are many, including "almirante" (amir-al-bahr), this being also thought to be one origin of "admiral" in english.

I was hoping you would let me choose anything :D
I am going by phonetics then (T) as it will help me to complete the challenge :P

Now, this is very interesting!
Only yesterday I was helping my sister in finding Arabic influence on other languages, and we picked a few for further study. I always knew there were many similarities with Spanish language and it would make sense to affect Portuguese as well, but I didn't think about it.

Marcos Kopschitz | 1766 comments KelB is the 22nd reader to complete the Alphabet Soup Challenge! Well done!

This proved to be a difficult challenge. Next year we'll have easier categories. To be announced... :-)

See

Difficult or not I loved it, I was delayed by the month readings (lots of repeats) and by my early baby that came 3 months earlier and blew my plans through the window :D

Shelley Yes! I finished 2 of these this year. What a fun challenge!

Just a few of suggestions for those who struggled. I found some of my harder to find letters by scrolling through other participants' challenges. Late in the challenge, I realized I may have under-utilized the number wild card option. I would have loved to DNF one of my X choices, but had forgotten about wild cards. Also, I don't have a ton of time to actually read (at least 2/3 - 3/4 of my "reads" are audio books), so if time is an issue, try shorter books. Some genres seem to have a higher number of shorter (100-200 pages) books, for example westerns and non-fiction. Also, especially if you have or work with young children, try doing the challenge using children's books. I counted several Juvenile fiction books in my second challenge. (I got distracted by several series last summer and somehow read nearly twice as many Juvenile books as planned . . . )

I'm thinking about completing this challenge with Picture Books next year, since I work in the children's area of my library once or twice a week, and my kids are all teens. It will be a great way to keep up with new books in the area.
