SOLVED. Fantasy YA book: Girl gets magic lessons and goes to hell dimension. [s]

I'm looking for a fantasy book I read as a child (probably came out in the late 90s). The main character is a girl (I think??) who trains as a magician/wizard and has to fight an evil force that seemed to be sort of a devil/demon type figure. The one scene I remember vividly is at the end, when she faces off with some of the devil-type creatures and they kill and eat a minor character. it's very graphic!
Does anyone know what book I'm talking about?
edited to add: the cover of the paperback version I had looked a like a stained glass portrait of the main character.
