She may be taking a break from Goodreads.

Most Groups I'm in are less active than they were a year ago. I've quit following most of the discussions I once followed, some due to increasing author spam but most due to decreased participation by others and general lack of response when someone posted a comment.

I have real life friends who have withdrawn from social media in the last year or so. I pointed out they could stay on Goodreads and just use it to keep track of books but only one did.

It's hard to keep coming up with ideas of things to chat about if you've had a group for a long time. Sometimes people have thought I've gone AWOL when actually I just cant think of anything to say!

You have a good point. One of my friends who quit facebook said it was because she was tired of seeing the same people say the same things over and over again.

Overall I am not commenting as much as I did in the past because, as you said, I have little new to say. I'm more inclined to start another book than comment on the one I just finished, especially if book I finished is by an author or in a series I previously posted about.

edited for clarification

With this Pandemic and staying home and not really face to face talking to people is really sad. I can't get together with friends most of the time and even though I am working it is still hard. I work in a library and of course with masks, plastic walls and curbside pick up you don't get to see the people as u usually did.

˜”*°•.˜”*°• Sheri •°*”˜.•°*”˜ | 53 comments People have started using FB as a platform for their political views and as a device for marketing their products. It's not nearly as fun as it used to be. My daughter and some of her friends are only using instagram now and other social medias that I'm not getting into. I like GR because none of that stuff is here. We don't get to see everyone's pictures but we can at least have a conversation without name calling. Although, I did post a review one time and the author messaged me and told me I was mean. And my friend posted a review about a book she didn't like and another reader told her she was stupid. :)

Charlene where do you live if you don't mind saying? Our library is open with restrictions, of course, but we can go in and browse the books and I think even sign up to use the computers.

I'm a Friends of the Library volunteer but not allowed to volunteer at library. There's curbside pickup but I'm using overdrive and hoopla. The last time I saw staff in person was shortly after library started doing curbside. For now there's Zoom meetings, YouTube videos, and virtual library.

Good point. Major reason friend quit using FB, the political-religious-anti-medical science rants.

It happens but fortunately it's not common on Goodreads.

People do come in to use the computers and only for 1 hour. You can browes but stay only for 45 - 60 minutes. And many of our usual people don't want to come in they put there books on hold 0for curbside pickup. I'm in NJ.

If your an author you really should know everyone is not going to like your book. And if she didn't like your review or comment well she should just let it go. Insulting people is a good way to lose people.

The library I work at re-opened to patrons this week though they can only come in, browse items check out items, use the copier and can also use the computer by appointment. I am just glad I don't have to walk up and down the stairs to drop books off at the front door!

Any thoughts on this?

Our Friends of the Library has kinda fallen apart due to the age of and lack of participants but we have been getting tons of donations so we have 2 book cases near the entrance and are putting out the donations free for anyone to take for now.

Thanks for information. I think many Friends groups are falling apart. Most book sale volunteers I know are in their 70s, 80s, even 90s.

Libraries here are not accepting donations but staff have taken this time to go through collection and de-acquisition out-of-date and damaged items by the cart full.

I recently heard of two other libraries doing "sales"
1. Boxes of free books are put on porch? patio? area and are free for one day which is announced in advance.
2. Library selling book bags which are pre-filled with books sorted by genre and are delivered curbside by staff.

message 228: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 1580 comments My library still isn't taking donations, but a neighboring village has begun to accept donations, so I took my "books-in-search-of-a-home" there.

My library DOES have a section of shelving devoted to the Friends' Sale books, and since the library has opened to the public again for browsing, those shelves are being maintained. So you can buy books from those shelves. I guess they have plenty of material in storage since they had to cancel their big sales last year (usually do one in spring and another in fall) and so far this year as well.

Last night waiting for the ferry this guy started talking to me. Asked if I was vaccinated blah blah blah. Couldn't really get away from him cause you know, waiting for the ferry.

He mentioned, more than once, that I "had a hot body", but had "no chance" with him, cause he was anti-vax and I had been vaccinated.

I kept thinking, "That makes no sense. If I have a hot body why would I want to get with a mouth breather like you?"

So, he wants your body but without your mind. Typical mouth breather thinking he's so hot himself that all women want him and he just has to decide who he will allow to access his wonderfulness.

We usually
do a book sale in the fall but of course last year we did not have one and I'm not sure we will this year, but you never know. THe Friends of the Library usually host it but we are not accepting any donations so it doesn't look good. We do keep telling people we are not accepting donations but some leave the books at our front door. Maybe when we open full time again it will start up.

I actually went in my library yesterday. First time in ages. I had forgotten my library card number so couldn't log in to check out ebooks. They gave me a new card, I promptly sat at the library computer and checked out the ebook. Then wandered around and checked out a couple hardbacks.

Since the pandemic has created a greater desire for ebooks, they have changed their policy and you can only check out 3 ebooks at a time.
