If you are using Goodreads to keep up with new books coming out you should be aware that there is a "caching issue" that may cause recent books (Oct 2019 & newer?) to not show up on authors' book lists. You can find book by searching using ISBN/ASIN so you can add it to your shelves.I knew about it but only recently realized how bad it is. I missed some in November and December that are still not showing on authors' book lists.
Super cool site that helps you find new books to read: https://www.literature-map.com/Type in an author's name and it suggests other authors you should like.

I took my grand daughter to the library. Her card is connected to her mothers because she's 12 years old. They told us she couldn't check anything out because her mother had a fine. Sooooo being the good grandmother that I am I said "I'll pay it how much." $29.00!!!!! I backed off of paying that one.

They can check out limited number of books from child or teen sections and no other items. Parents were using their children's cards to check out DVDs and not returning them leaving the children with hundreds of dollars in fines.
Our library has a fine limit of ten dollars. Once you get to ten dollars in fines you can't check anything out on that card. Though I have had families come in with multiple cards and check out items on the cards that don't have any fines. It is funny-some people can't stand to have a 15 cent fine on their card and some don't care how high the fine is.

Parents got library cards for their children, checked out stacks of DVDs, then lost (probably sold) the DVDs.
Sheri wrote: "Awful!!"Awful is the word for it.
People would bring in stacks of 10, 20 or more DVDs without cases to try to sell to us at used bookstore after being turned down by pawn shop across the street. Of course they had a story about why there were no cases. We told them the store didn't buy DVDs and that none us working there would buy them.
Library system has switched to Red Box style movie DVD check out with more restrictions than when the movie DVDs were part of library collection.
There are now special child and teen cards available. The card can be used to check out books from the child or teen collections. There are no fines for them if books are overdue but they can only have 3 books checked out on the card.
ETA: Ordinary library cards can be used to check out up to 100 items from library's regular collection.
Oklahoma. Shawnee, Tecumseh and McLoud are libraries in Pottawatomie county where I live. Libraries in Cleveland, McClain and Pottawatomie counties are Pioneer Library System. I thought 50 items per card was high limit but then Pioneer raised it to 100 physical items and these can be renewed 3 times if there are no holds. That's 12 weeks to have them.I volunteer at Shawnee but many of my e books, especially audios, come from Metro Library in Oklahoma county just west of me. Metro also has physical item check out limit of 100 but most physical materials can be renewed 8 times or up to 6 months, whichever comes first.
For someone like me who grew up using libraries with limits a fraction of those numbers the numbers seem huge!

We don't have a limit to how much you can check out at our library. I rarely see a lot of checkouts except for children's books which are mostly picture books.

At my Library books are unlimited and that is used very much so for summer reading. BOCD's are limited to 4 and CD's have no limits. DVD are 8 and if you don't bring them back it is $2 a day. That can add up and if the fines go over $35 they go to collection. Most people do bring stuff back on time but of course there is always someone who forgets.
I just called my library and I can have 35 items checked out at one time and that number includes 7 DVDs. If there are no holds I can renew them twice. I can't imagine trying to keep up with inventory when each card can check out 100 items pretty much indefinitely.

I'd be too stressed.
By the way, indefinitely is right. If you check the item in when renewals run out then you can check the item out again and start all over with number of renewals. I was acquainted with someone who'd had a book checked out for 3 years. She said she guessed she should check it in so someone else could have it but she loved it so much... I guess I was in too much shock to ask why she didn't buy her own copy.
What's happening at libraries you use?In case anyone is interested some of us are posting information about library closings and activity changes in the Library Events discussion. https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
I've been trying to keep track in areas where I know people and have been posting some of what I've found.
At my library the public computers are now off limits and you can no longer do inter-library loans. The sign outside says they arr not taking book donations. It's super busy otherwise, though.
Wisconsin here .... all libraries are closed. At first they said they would offer curb-side pick-up, but that lasted exactly one day and they shut that down as well. Closed at least until April 1, perhaps longer. All the books I had checked out now have due dates of MAY 1. No books should be returned to library / all the book drops have been locked.

All our books are checked out to May 1st also!

Fishface wrote: "At my library the public computers are now off limits and you can no longer do inter-library loans. The sign outside says they arr not taking book donations. When our libraries closed they said they would close until April 4 ... but the governor has issued a "safer at home" order that effective Through April 24 ... so I'm sure the libraries won't open before that order is rescinded. Our local library board already agreed to pay staff through April 30. Some of the librarians are working remotely ... virtual story time, virtual book clubs, etc. But all the circulation people are simply at home.
Our library has/ is closed till further notice. Staff has to check email everyday for further updates. All material is checked out to May 1st. No programming scheduled thru Apr 30 but that may be extended. I miss working there. As much as I love my family, I am ready to go back to work.
My local library is part of a three county library system and they finally made it official: closed until further notice.
My book club got an email from the person assigned to our club. She's offered to help if any of us have trouble signing into our online access. That was nice.
Lady ♥ Belleza wrote: "As much as I love libraries, I think closing them is the smart thing to do."Agreed. Library response = increased love and respect
Many libraries were working to deal with this early on.
Ahead of any social distancing order staff were ordered to maintain distance. Extra cleaning and disinfecting were being done. Libraries with older or otherwise vulnerable staff members made changes in order to protect those at risk. Now work is going on to maintain virtual libraries in wake of closing brick and mortar locations.

Thanks, Julie. That is sweet.
A lot of libraries seem to be doing online loans, but having a houseful of the real thing I limit my virtual reading.Just started The Fly and Other Horror Stories, for instance. The title story is the basis of the movies and closely matches the original film version. I long to rush into the den and watch it again. Until I stumbled across this book I never knew the movie was based on anyone's story.

I remember reading it but not as much as I remember the movie. Don't want to see the newer movie. My memories of the original movie are all too clear. To this day it bothers me when a barn fly gets in the house. They bzzzz, bzzzz, bzzzz.

As long as they don't say "Help MEEEEEE" you should be OK though...
Woohoo! Our library is partially open. You can't go in but you can place holds on the library's books and then pick them up at the front door. No loans from other libraries yet but at least I got a couple of movies that I haven't seen before and a few books for my library challenge that I haven't culled from my son's books!
Julie wrote: "Woohoo! Our library is partially open. You can't go in but you can place holds on the library's books and then pick them up at the front door. It's what Oklahoma City/County Metro, where I have a card, is doing. Unfortunately branches in that system are an hour or more away.
The system my local library is in is open. They encourage people to wear masks, discourage people lingering and are limiting the number of people in the building. On days they are open over nine hours they temporarily close after eight hours for cleaning and staff change then re-open. My friends and I who are older don't plan to go to the library and have cancelled all the holds we had on physical books.
My hairdresser called and is making appointments for mid June. I was supposed to go get my haircut the day after they closed the salon due to the virus so everything was cancelled. I know this is stupid but I can't wait to get my hair cut!
I also went back to work yesterday. I am going in once a week for 4 hours now because my boss is full time so she needs to be there more. It was nice to be back (and away from my family for awhile) but there are no patrons in the building. They pick up their holds by the door.

Welcome Ana!
Welcome Ana!
Our main library is now open to come inside!! There are distancing rules and we are not suppose to hang out too long but at least we can go in. The branches are still closed to coming inside but we can have the librarian get books and hand them to us at the door. The kids are having their summer reading program but they meet the librarian at the door and she gives them projects to do at home and she can hand them books and prizes.
Our library is going to maintain the status quo for the month of June. You can only pick up items at the front door though there is talk of get interlibrary loans back on track. I am still only working 4 hours a week since I share a office and my boss is in there and she is full time.
Despite record breaking number of new cases and increasing hospitalizations 2 of the largest library systems in Oklahoma ETA: See my July 2 post for changes.
