Jane is not at all the woman JA has written but only out to land a rich husband and when exposure in London while living with the Gardiners who dote on her doesn't work she uses her mother's advice about showing a man how interested you are. Meanwhile Elizabeth has sadly learned Jane is not the friend she thought and accepts Darcy, even tho' love has not yet settled in her heart. This short story is 7 chapters of about 60 pages.

A very short story which has Elizabeth teaching Darcy better how to "mend his conduct" towards others. In that course, she finds her feelings changed but her expectations much lower due to his status.

Their aunt, Mrs. Barry, wants to invite Jane to town to introduce her into society but Jane insists she will not attend without Elizabeth. So Elizabeth and Jane attend a masked ball in London in which Elizabeth’s costume is a patched up affair using peacock feathers on a green taken-in gown of her aunt’s. Several men dance with her but it is a man, whose costume she later learns is to resemble a cat who stares at her all night long before asking her to dance and asking if he might call on her the next day. The other man, Mr. Elephant, is charming and flirts with her but when Colonel Fitzwilliam learns of her “poor” dowry, he knows he must bow out.
Elizabeth stays in town while Jane travels home and thus Elizabeth believes it is all her aunt’s mechanisms which have E. in company so often with Mr. Darcy. She knows his prior opinion about her but she is willing to be a friend and have some conversation. When she travels back to Longbourn she thinks that is the end of seeing Mr. Darcy so often if ever again. He follows and Elizabeth comes to realize that she is under mistaken impressions as to where she stands in his esteem.

Mr. Darcy watches Elizabeth dance with Collins but is thwarted in his request to also dance with her as Mr. Collins’ clumsiness has caused a rip in her gown and she must now sit out the evening. He speaks of gaining her hand for a set of dances in the future.
Wow, that is a lot of books! I took a little JAFF break but am back to reading more JAFF and my TBR List had grown even longer.
Yes, but I am retired so have more time to read than many on this site. I do have a pile of TBR also...just can't keep up when there are something like 30 new JAFF books published monthly.
