Joy Stephenson (joyfrankie) | 463 comments I’ve just read Homegoing which I loved. It’s a short book but epic in the time period it covers (the start of the slave trade in Africa to the present day). We live briefly with two characters from each generation and I found them engaging. The story is moving but not over-wrought - it has integrity.

Joy - it's a great novel, we read it for book club last year and it was a rare unanimous YES!

Toyah (rockabillybibiliophile) | 275 comments I've just finished The Refugees by Viet Thanh Nguyen. I would definitely recommend it

Patricia | 199 comments So many books to add to my list! They all sound wonderful!

Toyah (rockabillybibiliophile) | 275 comments Just finished Dubliners by James Joyce which I was so under-awed by that I DNF. I rarely do that but it was just dragging after the first 8 or so borderline twee stories.

Toyah (rockabillybibiliophile) | 275 comments I've just finished Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng. Slightly predictable but still kept me reading and wondering! Overall a good read which perfectly suited my reading mood.

Toyah (rockabillybibiliophile) | 275 comments I finally got a chance to read My Friend Dahmer - a great graphic novel telling the story of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer's school days. It was really interesting.

Toyah (rockabillybibiliophile) | 275 comments I have just finished One Hundred Years of Solitude. One of the easiest five stars I've ever given! Amazing.

Toyah (rockabillybibiliophile) | 275 comments Paul it does seem to be a marmite book. I fell in love with it!

message 113: by Toyah (new)

Toyah (rockabillybibiliophile) | 275 comments I've just finished Beatrice and Virgil by Yann Martel and loved it! I love how he uses animals again as allegory. This time to tell a familiar tale.

message 114: by Pat (new)

Pat Morris-jones | 1373 comments I read 100 years with book club years ago. Very worthy. Dragged my way through it. Not worth it for me. Others loved it. I read another one by same author- same result for lovers and those who did not

For all of those that like historical fiction I can highly recommend The Gallows Pole

message 116: by Toyah (new)

Toyah (rockabillybibiliophile) | 275 comments So I've just quit Blood Meridian. I struggled through fifty pages before concluding it was boring the life out of me. The Small Hand next.

message 117: by Toyah (new)

Toyah (rockabillybibiliophile) | 275 comments I finished The Small Hand, and I think I'll move on to Scaredy Cat by Mark Billingham next. I can't quite decide.

message 118: by Toyah (new)

Toyah (rockabillybibiliophile) | 275 comments Finished Scaredy Cat by Mark Billingham in a day. Gotta love bank holiday weekends! It was a great thriller. I wouldn't normally read the second in a series before reading the first but it can definitely be read independently

Joy Stephenson (joyfrankie) | 463 comments Toyah wrote: "I've just finished Beatrice and Virgil by Yann Martel and loved it! I love how he uses animals again as allegory. This time to tell a familiar tale."

I must read that one as I loved both The Life of Pi and The High Mountains of Portugal, which I only read in June.

Toyah (rockabillybibiliophile) | 275 comments I've finally got to finish Wyrd Sisters. I've been dipping in and out of it since March, I've had a terrible attention span!

message 121: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Mcgee | 209 comments I have just finished No is Not Enough by Naomi Klein. It was a read for the bookclub I run.

I really enjoyed it, found it both scary and inspirational.

Was interested to read that Dystopian fiction is experiencing a boom in America - I wonder why!

I can't think why either...

Nikki Mcgee | 209 comments Have finally readEleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine ages after everyone else.

I enjoyed it although would say that it was a nice book rather than a great book

I am going to give this a go. Am trying to read between 50 and 100 pages an evening so that I keep reading when term starts

message 125: by Toyah (new)

Toyah (rockabillybibiliophile) | 275 comments I've just finished The Shakespeare Curse by J. L. Carrell. It was full of history, was well researched, and all in all a pretty good murder mystery read!

message 126: by Joy (new)

Joy Stephenson (joyfrankie) | 463 comments I've just read Circe - brilliant, couldn't put it down. The author creates gods who are believable but not human and the character of Circe herself is completely convincing.

message 127: by Joy (new)

Joy Stephenson (joyfrankie) | 463 comments And now also read The Song of Achilles , another compelling story by Madeline Miller.

message 128: by Toyah (new)

Toyah (rockabillybibiliophile) | 275 comments I've just finished Hallowe'en Party by Agatha Christie. A great classic murder mystery perfect for Halloween month.

message 130: by Toyah (new)

Toyah (rockabillybibiliophile) | 275 comments I've just finished The Mahé Circle by Georges Simenon. A great character study and psychological thriller about one man's increasing dissatisfaction with his own carefully engineered life.
