Sarah | 18549 comments I finished Odd Hours so i made my GR yearly challenge. I thought it was awful though - it just annoyed me. Now reading a short book Barren as i want to wait to the new year now before starting a proper book.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Oh we are very flammable. In fact, Australia has it's own fire rating system that goes from Moderate (there is no Low) to Catastrophic. Today, the entire state of South Australia was all rated as Catastrophic.

message 2003: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments Oh Rusalka, that is too hot. Stay safe!

I abandoned Lost For Words. It wasn't for me. It relied almore completely on book references and bad poetry (not even funny bad, just bad!). I gave up at 20%. Possibly too early to give up, I usually try to get to at least 50% but I had the feeling this one wasn't going to get any better. Another lesson that should be well learned by now on buying books about bookshops - they rarely work for me!

For something completely different, I am listening to Scythe. I don't usually enjoy YA but this one interests me plus it was on offer cheap!

No. Bad poetry is a more than valid excuse. I have a rough 10% rule so you are fine.

Urgh! I have no idea what to do about/with snow.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I have a 10% or 50 pages rule. Whatever comes first. Don't feel bad, Margo.

Kristie | 19137 comments I finished Cold Blood yesterday and read The Memory Box as well. I am currently reading Sold on a Monday and hope to finish before the end of the year. I wanted to start another audiobook, but I don't know if I'll be able to finish before the end of the year, so I might hold off for a few days since I think all of the books I have ready to go will fit the yearly challenge.

The weather is insane at the moment. Over here, at midnight, it is a pleasant 13 C! I never remember such a mild christmas.

Desciding to pull the plug on a book is normally not easy. In this case it was made much easier by the dodgy poems LOL

message 2011: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments I finished reading The Darkest Secret. I gave it 4 stars, but I'm tempted to throw it across the room. (view spoiler)

I'm downloading Kill the Dead and will start it tomorrow. There's a few days before I can start my 2019 reads.

message 2012: by Adam (new)

Adam | 18 comments im closing on the final chapters of Map of Days - - what an exciting read - well paced - i will never look at dog treats the same way again !!
strongly recommend this book - but in saying this i dont think you should read this as a stand alone title - one should really read the other titles in the series - before attempting to read this - as some of the characters that appear in the first couple of book do crossover into this one - again i say dive into this book !!

message 2013: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments I finished The Play of Death for my last zodiac read. I'm not sure what I'll start today that I can finish in the next two days.

message 2014: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I'm having the same problem. The books I have planned for january fit the yearly challenge so can't start them yet. I've been reading short stories to fill the gap, ones too short to fit any challenge.

message 2015: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I've also been timing my final book so I can finish it on the 31st, but now I think I may not finish it in time at all. Parents-in-law suddenly came by for a visit. Unless I get some hours of reading in tomorrow.

message 2016: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments I did the same, Peggy. Planned my last book to finish on the 31st, but ended up with one of my migraines, so probably won't finish on time now.

I may do the same. I seem to have a few that could fill the space.

I hope 2019 is a better year for you Kristie, with less migraines.

Thanks, Janice. I'm actually getting less now than I was. The problem is that once I get one they take forever to go away.

message 2021: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments Sandra wrote: "Is there anything that might be triggering your migraines more often, Kristie?"

Everything triggers them, Sandra. I have to be careful around bright lights, loud noises, strong odors (cigarette smoke kills me), dehydration, and certain foods or drinks can affect them. Mostly my issue is lack of sleep and stress. I was getting them almost weekly for a while, now I'm down to monthly.

The doctor wants to try another preventative, but last time they got worse when I did that. I just finished a round of acupuncture and nasty herbal tea. That helped more than the doctor's meds!

I started reading A Map of Days yesterday. It is fun to be back with Miss P and the kids.

message 2023: by Tricia (new)

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 900 comments I just breathed a huge sigh of relief while reading the recent messages in this thread. I was starting to feel really goofy because I've been putting off starting books because it's still 2018, and I couldn't count them for next year. I've been arguing with myself that it's just a digital badge I'm working towards, and besides, there are always more books, and yet I haven't started anything that I might not finish before the year is out. So glad lots of you are doing the same.

message 2024: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Lol Tricia, many of us are like that!

I finished The Alloy of Law, my last book for this year with an hour to go before I have to get ready for the evening. Good timing! It was a 5 star read, so great end to my reading year.

In the new year I'll start with Maisie Dobbs

message 2027: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments I read two short stories last night - Clan Rathskeller and A Test of Mettle. Both were short stories in the Iron Druid series. I started Rules for Virgins and will finish it tonight. I also hope to start & finish Short Stories from Hogwarts of Heroism, Hardship and Dangerous Hobbies. It feels good to get these short stories off my lists.

Definitly. Generally they get left forgotten as they don't count for challenges. Maybe we need another short book challenge, maybe reading as many as necessary to make up the normal 175 page minimum.

message 2029: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments LOL! I don't think I have any left after this.

message 2030: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Haha. I read Adjustment Team, During the Dance, Barren and Bloodchild. I am now reading Second Variety. I have loads left though.

I've decided to restart my two non fiction books tomorrow so i can count them for the yearly challenge. One i had only listened to 10 minutes of and the other i had read just under 40 pages however not much of that went in as i read it in the hungover train journey from hell. So it makes sense to restart them both. I'll throw a fiction book into the mix too although i haven't decided which to go with first. I'll decide tomorrow.

message 2031: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments I'm reading Blink and parts of it are set in Sarahs old stomping ground. I've had it in my library for ages and it turning out to be a pretty decent mystery.

I have two library books lined up beside my to start tomorrow for the new challenge. Very excited :-D

After I posted my reply, it occurred to me that the challenge could include anthologies of short stories. I have a few of those. It could either be an anthology, or a stand alone short stories totalling 175 pages.
