I didn't get to The Fifth Season yesterday, but I did finally finish Pretty Ugly Lies (from the October challenge!). It was really good. I'm hopefully starting Cold Blood this afternoon. I only have two books left to be current with the series.
Henrik Ibsen nailed the child bride syndrome way back in 1879 in his famous play A Doll's House. Hard not to be infuriated, but the situation continues today.
My review
I finished The Fifth Season and gave it 4 stars. I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series.I will start the group read, Sugar Money, tomorrow.
I finished Sugar Money for the group read. Here is my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...I will start The Shadowy Horses later today.
I'm curious to hear what you think of it Lisa. I read it some year ago, but it was quite different from what I expected, based on the blurb and my previous experiences with the author.

I hope I will enjoy it, it's got three things in it that I love which are Scotland, a ghost and a little bit of Ancient Roman history (and I've always been particularly interested in what may have happened to the Ninth Hispana Legion) so fingers crossed it works for me. What other books have you read by her? I have read Mariana and Sophia's Secret and I really enjoyed both.
Yeah, I like those things too, but I think the story for me was too centered on the present day (not really being historical fiction as I was expecting it).Besides The Shadowy Horses I read The Winter Sea (aka Sophia's Secret), The Firebird, The Rose Garden, and A Desperate Fortune.

Yes, I'm surprised that so many people shelve it as historical fiction when it clearly isn't. I guess the synopsis catches a lot of people out. At least I'm aware that it doesn't have a big historical element so I'm more prepared.
I have [book:The Rose Garden|18912650] on my kindle and I also recently bought her new book, Bellewether. You should check out Mariana, it's good.
I think that helps! You have a better idea of what to expect :)Mariana has been on my tbr for ages! I think I have scheduled it in every yearly challenge I've participated in, but somehow I never get to it. Don't know why, I do really want to read it..

Lol, yes that happens to me a lot. I have got books slotted in for next years challenge that I also had in my challenges for the past 2-3 years! I actually want to reread Mariana at some point so if you want to buddy read it sometime, let me know. That might be one way to get you to read it 😉😁
My hold for Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows came available from the library. I'd forgotten I even had requested it. I'm rather bored with the book I'm currently reading so decided to take a break from it and read this one.
Unsheltered I am loving this book. It is two stories set centuries apart. I like the modern day story the best. It is nothing like my life. Yet it is dealing with a lot of issues in my life. Kingsolver is one of my favorite authors. I think its funny the one book of hers I don't care for is her most famous. The Poisonwood Bible just didn't work for me.
That’s interesting, Renee. I’ve only read The Poisonwood Bible by her and didn’t care for it. Maybe I should give some of her other work a try.
Renee wrote: "Unsheltered I am loving this book. It is two stories set centuries apart. I like the modern day story the best. It is nothing like my life. I finished Sugar Money. I liked it but I didn't think it was as good as The Observations. I finished up a couple of short stories - The Jester and Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad. Both a waste of time.I'm 35% into The Secret Place. So far it is wonderful!
I was in the waiting list for The Poisonwood Bible and I happened to receive an email today about it being available for me now. Coincidences...
Another "tanfastic" book from Aussie author/artist Shaun Tan, who wrote/created The Arrival in 2007 to describe migration without words.
5+★ Link to my review with lots of pictures
I finished Sugar Money for the group themed read. I'll be starting Den of Wolves to kill off that trilogy.

..."I love Shaun Tan. Beautiful books.
I finished The Fifth Season for the buddy read which i loved. Now back to Odd Hours to finish the zodiac challenge. I'm also listening to Cure: A Journey into the Science of Mind Over Body. I'm trying to read more non fiction for work. I've not been mentioning in here as proberly no one would be interedted but this one is excellent. Fantastic chapters on placebo illustrating how powerful our mind can be and how it can heal us physically. I was pleasantly surprised to find a few chapters on hypnosis and virtual reality too. It's an accesdible book and i highly recommend it if you're in to health, pschology or science.
Sarah wrote: "I've not been mentioning in here as proberly no one would be interedted but this one is excellent..."That is awesome Sarah, it is truly amazing what the mind is capable of in terms of creating a physical reality. Now I will have to add another book to my wish list, thanks alot lol
I've just finished Fierce Kingdom and am getting back to The Fifth Season. I am also reading Cold Blood. I'm hoping to have some reading time this evening.
The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins, (a close friend of Charles Dickens is said to be one of the first mystery novels. An entertaining classic.
3.5★ My review
Finally got to the end of The Secret Place . I love Tana Frenchs writing but with this one, and the ptevious book in this series, I thought she was very long winded and could have used a good editing. I also had a few problems with some of her police procedural stuff in this one.I am being critical of a good story that I did enjoy but it is just that I know she can do so much better!
I have started Take Me In

Great review Patty. I loved that book up to the last section that IMO really let it down. I have enjoyed other books by Collins. I find him much more readable than Dickens. I agree with all your comment especially re:Marian who is a much better character than the so called heroine of the story.

It also introduced me to Tim Gerard Reynolds, one of my favourite narrators.
Hmmm... I just went to Audible, and my edition of The Secret Place has been switched out. When I bought the audiobook, I had the edition narrated by Tim. After I bought it, the edition became unavailable in Canada. I understood that it stays in your library as the edition you purchased. A new edition is now available on Audible, but by different narrators.
ETA - I decided to download it onto my phone, and the edition that will download is Tim's. PHEW!

You'll have to let me know what you think when you get to it!
Janice wrote: "Margo wrote: "Finally got to the end of The Secret Place . Tim is also one of my favorites - I love his voice and I also love the kinds of books he reads. He seems to stick to fantacy. The first time I listened to him was Wool Omnibus and I was hooked!
My version of The Secret Place was read by Steven Hogan and Lara Hutchenson. Steven has a similar voice to Tim but now I am gutted that is a better version out there LOL I wonder why they redid it? It seems pointless :-/
Janice wrote: "I will reread Faithful Place some day for two reasons - Tim and Frank. Yup, crushes. LOL!"Now you're breaking my heart Janice - my version was read by Gerry O'Brien! Still my favorite of the series though 😉
I finished Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows and used it for the monthly challenge. My original pick, Sage's Eyes, wasn't interesting me and so when my library hold came through with Erotic Stories I set it aside. Now, that I can go back to it, I find I don't want to, so it's a dnf.I will start The Play of Death for my zodiac challenge.
I had a library book left over, so I thought I would read it. It is very good. I am reading The Grass Harp, Including A Tree of Night and Other Stories. I am one page away from finishing the title story. It is beautiful.
it starts so good - they have just discovered a secret doorway in the basement of Jacobs Grandfathers house - OMG !!!
Adam, can you please use spoilers when you talk about the content of books, even if it doesn't seem to be much of a spoiler?
Oh haha! My apologies, I didn't know that. But still, as it's the 4th book in the series, it could be a spoiler to people who haven't finished the first 3 books yet and avoid reading blurbs of later books.
I still need to read Library of Souls, but I already bought A Map of Days. I’m really enjoying the story. I also have Tales of the Particular to read. It’s just a side book in the series. (Sorry no links. They really need to make links available on the app.)
Bone Lines by Stephanie Bretherton has an intriguing title, beautiful cover, and interesting premise - how to connect today's researcher (Eloise) with "Sarah's" ancient bones. I wish it had been better executed.
Link to what I found disappointing
