Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I'm starting The Haunting of Hill House. I have high expectations for this, seeing as it's regularly described as one of the best haunted house novels ever written, so I hope it lives up to them.

message 1552: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I love TTBEotW, Patty! I have around 100 pages to go. I'm really looking forward to reading Kate Morton's new book as well.

message 1553: by Tricia (new)

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 900 comments Okay, I was all good through the toppler, but now I can't seem to find the motivation to read. LOL That sounds strange. I'm still trying to get through The Lost City of the Monkey God which shouldn't be a problem because I'm enjoying it, but I seem to be dragging. Time to set it aside for a couple of days and then try again. Hoping my current slump is short-lived.

message 1554: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Sometimes a shirt slump is a secondary effect of topplers, Tricia. I'm also reading only a few pages a day, but in my case it could be the book. I might DNF it after giving it the last chance tonight.

message 1555: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I have to tease you about the shirt slump, Sandra. I hate it when my shirt slumps and doesn't hold its shape any more. :)

I need a 5 star book, something I can get lost in.

message 1556: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments 😄, It is amazing how our eyes/mind can autocorrect the typos! I never noticed Sandra's shirt slump until you pointed it out, Janice.

I've been having the same slump since the toppler too. After clutching the print version of The Poisonwood Bible all of last week, I can't seem to want to hold anything in my hands. I have two more huge print books to get through and a story on my Nook, but all I seem to want to do is listen to audiobooks on my iPod. My work this week has allowed me to do more listening, in between meetings too.

message 1557: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Janice - what about the 4th book in Deborah Harkness' All Souls Trilogy that just came out? Time's Convert. I'm hoping it will be a 5 star read. I remember that you liked the 3rd book much better than I did. I am saving it as a reward for finishing my ZZ challenge.

I have it on my audible wishlist and would have gotten it this month but I needed to get a couple of other books first, one being The Tattooist of Auschwitz.

message 1559: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments I finished City of Thieves and thought it was great. I started The Coordinates of Loss today and am already 40% through. I seem to be doing well with audiobooks this week. Now, I just need to get back on track with physical/Kindle books.

As Sandra! It's too early to do things like that to me. Now I'll be worried about "shirt slumps" after every toppler :-P

Nothing to be worried about, Margo. It was not me or the toppler. I finally decided DNF it. I am talking about The House by the River. Too much drama. Too little Greece. Still deciding what I am going to read now.

Mine's usually from too many chips.

message 1565: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I finished my challenge read, Winterbay Abbey: A Ghost Story. It was rather tame for a ghost story, though the atmosphere was very gothic. I was lamenting that it wasn't a very scary ghost story, but my resulting dream belied that. In the dream, I was walking down the hall and came to the stairwell headed to the basement. There was a young woman with a black dress coming up and she scared the hell out of me. I screamed a swear word, and woke up. I was full of adrenalin so much that I couldn't go back to sleep. I got up and as I approached the stairwell, peeked around the corner to make sure nobody was there. What the book lacked, my dream made up for it.

I will start Magic Triumphs. I had a hold on it at the library and the ebook became available the other day.

Gosh, that's a pretty creepy dream, Janice! I had a similar dream after reading Dark Matter. Basically in this dream I replaced the main character in the book and when I woke up, I was convinced the ghost was lurking outside my bedroom door! Lol.

message 1567: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments Celine This was for my f2f group. It started out slow. I wound up loving it.

I think my problem with the beginning was I was expecting a post-apocalyptic book. I read The Dog Stars and really liked it I assumed that this was the same type of book.

Instead I got a mystery with a unique detective. Heller has range in his stories. He also uses words well. I plan on reading more by him.

message 1568: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Lol, Janice. Those dreams are not fun.

message 1569: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I finished To The Bright Edge of the World and I'm so in love with it. One of my favourite books ever, I'd say. I wrote a review here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Too bad that whichever book I'll pick up next will fade in comparison...

This has been on my wishlist since it was first published. I think I will have to give it more priority.

I moved it to my "you-really-need-to-read-this-one" shelf, Peggy.

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 900 comments You've all convinced me. To The Bright Edge of the World is going to be my reward when I finish the books I have going now. Maybe it will get me out of this miserable slump. I want to start it now, but I'm forcing myself to wait.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I'm about 40% of the way through The Haunting of Hill House. I'm on the fence in terms of how I feel about it so far. I do quite like it but it's not blowing me away or anything.

I am also just starting Call of the Curlew, which was a cover buy for me. I know next to nothing about it, but I'm hoping I will be pleasantly surprised.

The Woman Next Door finished this.Swapped this for The famished road, which was a bit too surrealistic for me.
East of the Mountains,for PNW.

It's one of those naked hardbacks without a dust jacket. It's even prettier in real life as it's really shiny.

message 1588: by Jess (new)

Jess Penhallow | 28 comments I've just finished Dracula. I thought it was a well written story with great characters but it was very repetitive and slow and had an unsatisfying ending.

I didn't know what book to start next so I started 3 books!

The Good Immigrant
Slade House
War and Peace

message 1589: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I finished Dead Man's Walk on audiobook today. Will Paton does such a great job.

Next up is Assassin's Apprentice for a buddy read.

message 1590: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4529 comments Unfortunately several of the books I requested from my library became available all at once. Somehow that always happens and I end up in a frenzy reading . I'm reading series books at the moment. I've got The Fallen Angel, and Walking Shadows on my kindle, plus I'm listening to As Bright as Heaven. I also have a couple that I started reading (The Last Suppers and Lost Boy: The True Story of Captain Hook ) but I can renew them.

Ah, Roz - consider a good excuse to do nothing but read! You're on a deadline, after all (disregarding the remark about renewing- ha).

message 1592: by PattyMacDotComma (new)

PattyMacDotComma These are two great kids' non-fiction books about their favourite subjects: dinosaurs and sharks! And full of the facts they love to stun grown-ups with. I included lots of screen shots so you can see what you're getting and what kids are learning. (Be honest - you are learning, too.)

The real books come with kits to build skeletons - good fun, I bet.

Margo | 11628 comments I finished The City & the City and was really impressed with it. It is so complex. I am an instant China Miéville fan. 5 stars.

Also reading Major Pettigrew's Last Stand which is quietly enjoyable.

Started my reread of Assassin's Apprentice last night.

message 1595: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments I finished The Coordinates of Loss yesterday, which was excellent, and will be starting Ghost Gifts today for the monthly challenge.

I also "finished" (dnf at 43%) My Real Name Is Hanna. I started this one for the toppler and just got slower and slower with picking it back up. The other night I literally read one page, then put it aside because "I should probably get to bed early." Well, that's certainly a sign that I wasn't engaged. So, done with that one!

I went back to Pretty Ugly Lies, which I started for the challenge last month, but didn't finish on time. It's a much better story.
