Saar The Book owl | 2650 comments I've just finished Tuesday's Gone and if it wasn't a Sunday today, I went straight to the library to get the 3th part. This was such a good book and then the end...Still thinking: 'What?'.

Besides that, I think I'm reading a bit to much a the same tim:
A Greyhound of a Girl
The Waking Fire
The Masked City
Dreams of Gods & MonstersKafka on the Shore
The Name of the Wind

Aside of 'Kafka' it's all fantasy. Need to change from genre to take a breath.

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I needed a bit of a break from the The Children's Hour the other night so picked up a short story, The Hammer and the Goat. While I have no intention of reading more of The Vagrant series, this short story had two of my favourite characters. Goat is as recalcitrant as ever. LOL! And Hammer shows a more vulnerable side - sort of. It was just what I needed and I can happily go back to the other book.

How far in to Kafka are you? We did a budfy read for it last year so feel free to check it out. It's a great book. Actually, you've got a few good books on the go at the moment.

Glad you enjoyed it, Tricia. I loved it but like you, I also preferred The Song of Achilles.

Margo | 11628 comments I finished Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine today - just in time for my book club tonight. I liked it but as usual had a quibles! My review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show.... I can't rememeber who was asking about it but I hope this answers the question 😊

Kristie | 19143 comments I've been slowly working through The Dry Grass of August for 3 weeks and decided to just put it aside. The storyline isn't one consistent timeline, it jumps around so it is more difficult to become invested in the story or attached to the characters. I just wasn't engaged enough and felt a bit of a slump coming on, so best to move on for now.

I'm going to start Pretty Ugly Lies for the monthly challenge instead.

message 1359: by Tricia (new)

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 900 comments You guys keep talking about them so over the past week, I've listened to The Cuckoo's Calling, The Silkworm, and Career of Evil. It wasn't in the plan, but I read the first one and had to keep going. Thankfully, my library had all of them available on downloadable audio. Unfortunately, I spent so much time reading I got virtually nothing else accomplished. LOL I really liked all of them, but I think the first one was my favorite.
So now it's back to Fahrenheit 451 which I'm about halfway through and Three Things About Elsie which is driving me crazy because it's told from several different perspectives and skips around a lot. I think it's going to turn out to be good though if I can just get into it.

message 1360: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19143 comments Tricia, will you be joining our buddy read of Lethal White? It’s the fourth book in the series.

message 1361: by Tricia (new)

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 900 comments It's in November, right? I'm doing a buddy read with Saar then so I probably won't join, but I am planning on reading it and will definitely check out the buddy read discussion at some point.

message 1362: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19143 comments No, we plan to do it sooner. It comes out later this month, so either the end of the month or sometime in October, I think. We didn’t set a date yet, just said soon after it’s released.

message 1363: by Tricia (new)

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 900 comments Ah, I don't know why I was thinking it was later. Since it's earlier, yes, I'll join the buddy read. I'll go order the book now. Soo excited!

message 1364: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19143 comments Glad you'll join us! You might have confused it because we planned a couple of different buddy reads at the same time. We scheduled The Tattooist of Auschwitz for November.

message 1365: by Cherie (last edited Sep 17, 2018 04:02PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I started and finished listening to Beautiful Ruins and The House of the Spirits. I have not read the spoilers from the group read last month for the first, but I feel like I could have missed not reading it, after-the-fact. I definitely enjoyed the second, although it was long, long, and not so pretty, especially at the end. I think I am done exploring Isabel Allende for now though. I am currently listening to Before We Were Yours

I finished Out Stealing Horses and really have to say that I was disappointed in the story. Sad and cold is all can say for it. I finished The Good the Bad and the Infernal for the monthly challenge and I will not be finding my way to the next book of the trilogy any time soon. Ugh.

Still working my way through The Core and The Natural.

message 1366: by Tricia (new)

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 900 comments Wow! Cherie, it doesn't sound like you've had too pleasant a reading time lately. I'm sorry you have had a few disappointments.

Glad you liked the Isabel Allende though. I remembered that it was long, but I thought it might have seemed that way to me because I was reading in Spanish. LOL Guess not.

I've refrained from commenting on Beautiful Ruins while the group was reading it last month because it was a 1-star read for me. I felt it was a total waste of time! :-) that after I thought it started well...didn't sound like you detested it as much as I did though. Out Stealing Horses was a bit better. Okay, I'm not in the habit of lowballing ratings but these two weren't my favs.

message 1368: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19143 comments Oh no, Cherie. Sounds like you've had a string of duds. Hope you enjoy Before We Were Yours more. I liked that one a lot.

message 1369: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Thank you all. It has not been a complete loss because most of the books were for tasks and challenges. Unfortunately they can't all be five star reads.

Tricia - I can't believe that the Allende book was any shorter in Spanish. I think she learned from this one. The other two, later books that I read were shorter. ;o) I am glad that I listened to it. I loved the dual narration. I will read more from her at another time. She is an interesting story teller but I have had enough of revolution and torture for a while too.

Kristie - I'm just at the beginning of Before WE Were Yours. So far so good. I know what it is about, so I am prepared.

@Beautiful Ruins - I will add my thoughts to the group read thread.

@Sarah: Thanks :) I'm not far in 'Kafka' yet, but I'm curious on what you all found of it. I'll definately check the thread.

message 1373: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Definitely check it out then. I think we all enjoyed it but at the same time had no idea what was going on.

message 1376: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm pretty sure there was either a buddy read or group read for it. I think group read.

message 1377: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Yes, we did a group read for Rebecca a few years ago. We had lots of great discussion, I remember. I even watched all of the movies that have been made, based on the book.

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I finished The Listener last night. I really enjoyed it. I was reading it instead of catching up here.

I started Follow You Home this afternoon. I'm only about 1/2 hour in, if that.

Sarah | 18550 comments I finished The Core for the buddy read which kills the series. Now back to finish King of Thorns.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Margo wrote: "Oh I really enjoyed Different Class. I am in awe of Joanne Harris ability to switch genre! ..."

I was not sure I liked it at first, but I am definitely being pulled in. I like her ability to paint characters in such an engaging way. She never comes out and tells you anything. She sends out tiny barbs that stick into you and hold you fast, to make you want to keep reading to find out things and where the story is going, even when the characters are unlikeable.

message 1384: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished The Core for the buddy read and killed the series too.

message 1385: by Jess (new)

Jess Penhallow | 28 comments I've just finished Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind this after a lot of bugging from my boyfriend (who loved it!).

I think it started off really well but he came across a bit to opinionated at times.

Full review here

I am also halfway through Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch and loving it! Who knew the Apocalypse could be so hilarious!

What a great way to describe her writing! I think any author would be happy to summed up in that way :-)

I also finished The Core today and thus killed off a series of 5 books within a year! I am so pleased with myself B-)

I am starting The Burning Chambers.

message 1389: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Welcome Jess. I loved Good Omens. It is good fun.

message 1390: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Did you finish Follow You Home? Not my favorite genre, but I listened to this audiobook. (AmyK bought it and I had nothing else to listen to.) I knew the narrator from previous books.

message 1391: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments That was Janice I think ;-)

message 1392: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I finished King of Thorns. It was so much better than the first book in the series. Now on to Good Behavior for the monthly challenge.

message 1393: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Hahaha, I meant to put "Janice" at the start of my last post, Margo.

Margo - I just found out who the bad guy was today, in Different Class. I had NO idea!

Rob got it for xmas last year along with the follow up book. He started it and read quite a hit, really liking how it was written and how accessible it was. But he hasn't picked it up since. Not because he doesn't like it. So I need him to finish first before i can give it a go.

That question is directed to me? I haven't finished it yet. I've got about 7 hours left in the audiobook. I can't decide if the mystery is (view spoiler)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I finished The Children's Hour not a moment too soon. I will start Lethal White tonight for a buddy read.
