My August reads include Circe, do I need to read
The Song of Achilles first?

message 1102: by Heather (new)

Heather I'm currently reading The Life List. An easy summer read.

No, you don't have to read The Song of Achilles first.

No, definitely not. They are completely seperate from each other.

I missed the Circebuddy read; so I'm planning on reading it next month as well. Maybe we can compare notes.

That would be great! I'm reading it for a challenge in August and I hope the library has it for me soon!

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Tricia and Heather, be sure to check out the discussion thread for the Circe buddy read and feel free to add your own comments if you wish. I'm sure at least one of us will discuss it with you as we all enjoyed the book and had plenty to say about it 😉😃

Thanks, Lisa, …. Good to know!

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I finished Wandfasted last night and started The Cuckoo's Calling for the last book in Badge 2 of the zodiac challenge. I read the prologue, but I may have to read it again since I can't remember a thing about it.

message 1110: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19143 comments I finished The Widow's Watcher today and really enjoyed it. It's a contemporary fiction novel and I'd probably add a drama genre. I thought it was a mostly good story with just a few points that might be a little bit too wrapped up perfectly in the end. Without giving anything away because it really is a good story ad worth a read, I feel like there were no loose ends, just a pretty little bow, if you know what I mean. Still at least a 4 star read for me.

I also hope to finish The Boston Girl tomorrow. I'm enjoying the story, but nothing really happens. Which is odd to say because I guess things have happened in the story, but it doesn't feel like it. It's just like listening to a older woman tell you her life story. I feel like I won't even remember the story months from now, but I'm still enjoying it well enough.

I plan to start Leave No Trace tomorrow. Then, next up, after The Boston Girl, is Hello Again, which is technically book 2 in the series, but is really book 3. The first book was listed as #0.5, which is just silly because it's a full book and the basis for the series.

I am going to settle down this afternoon with Magpie Murders.

If people want to chat about it (I gave it 5 stars, I am so happy to), there is a buddy read thread we can head to here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

The Light Between Oceans, is one of my all time favorites!! I only read it last year. I recommend it to everyone. It is emotional and it is sad, but it is also a beautiful love story. I hope my husband loves me this much.

~Annaki~ (annaki) | 83 comments Ok, good- then I will read it. I just paused for a moment there, because I tend to get very easily anxious/depressed if it is stories of death/illness- I have had too much of that in my own life and so reading about it gets my anxiety going.

I feel for you! So I am not recommending this for you. There is death and illness and somethings that unfair and can't be resolved on earth. But because of what I went through, I connected to one of the main characters.

Heather Annaki,

I saw on your TBR list Whistling Past the Graveyard, which I also loved. It is about a little girl that learns to look past black/white. Great story!!

Yes, I'm trying to get a hold of it- which is proving to be quite difficult. Really want to read it :)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I finished The Secret Keeper and discovered that it fits the zodiac challenge in that both main characters are over 60.

I will start Sandman Slim tomorrow.

I completely forgot about that book. I remember Travis liking it and i bought it.

I have The Secret Keeper on my Kindle. Perhaps one to fit in this year if it will help with the challenge. I need to see which signs I am missing to complete my first badge.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Anna, I have The Secret Keeper for Cancer/Rose Quartz, but maybe your edition is not the one with the pink cover.

I debated using it for pink cover too, but I really want to read the one I have slotted in that spot.

Hey Margo - I've read both and I really think you need to read the Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry first. It really leads to the next book.

message 1132: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments Thanks Jayme. I hate to read series out of order so I will hold off on Queenie 😉

Same here! I only remembered I owned it when Janice posted that she had finished it. I will try to get to it soon.

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I finished Sandman Slim on audiobook tonight. I didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped I would. Still, I gave it 4 stars. The second book in the series is in my audible library and I'm hoping that it is a bit better. I have to admit, I'm interested in how the characters will evolve.

Next up is Lover Eternal. I'm happy that I'm finally able to cross off some of the older titles on my TBR list.

Magpie Murders gets the thumbs up from me too ;-)

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 900 comments Whew! It's been crazy busy around here, but I managed to finish Uprooted. It's a good thing it was on audio because I've had no time for reading a physical book, and I didn't want to wait on this one. I absolutely loved it!

message 1147: by Heather (new)

Heather I started, last night, The Dry. And it has had an intense start and eerie feel to the story. I like it!

message 1148: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished Zorro last night. It was great!

I finished The Library at the Edge of the World this morning. I enjoyed this as an audiobook with Emma Lowe narrating. She has a lovely Irish accent and I thought the story of the imaginary village on the west coast of Ireland was interesting. It is the first book in a series, with #4 being released this year. Of course my library only bought the first one.

I also finished Eva Luna. I liked the writing style very much. I thought the story line was great, until the last 150 pages, when it became less interesting and the theme changed. I am anxious to start The House of the Spirits to compare them - as soon as I finish a few others that I have started.

I am currently reading The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper for the monthly challenge and just started the first book in The Corfu Trilogy, which is My Family and Other Animals for the alternate group read. I am still reading The Earth Moved: On the Remarkable Achievements of Earthworms for my ZZ challenge.

message 1149: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I finished Lover Eternal on audiobook tonight and will start Spinning Silver tomorrow for my new release challenge.

message 1150: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments I finished a few days back A Single Shard which I really, really liked. It is a beautiful middle grade/young adult novel.

I am still reading Quincas Borba and enjoying Machado de Assis's smart acidic humor, and his vision on the people of his time. I'm using it for the Cancer/Woodpecker task, since it is set in South America (Brazil) and written by a South American author.

I got an email from my library about When Breath Becomes Air being available for me now. This memoir has been in my TBR for a while, and also fits another task in the ZZ challenge, "air" in the title.
