We recently completed a buddy read on Wizard of Earthsea. I believe we also did one a couple of years ago for The Gift of Rain. It was either a buddy read of group themed read. You might be interested in the discussions.

siriusedward (elenaraphael) | 887 comments I did look into the one for GoR.. and the recent buddy read thread I do remember. I will look into it too. Thanks Janice.

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4026 comments I finished reading The Mayor of Casterbridge which I thought was brilliant.

Now reading Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman and enjoying it.

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments I think I was around for The Gift of Rain. I have read another by this author because i enjoyed The Gift of Rain.

Me too! The Garden of Evening Mists was the other one I read.

message 606: by siriusedward (new)

siriusedward (elenaraphael) | 887 comments Did you like it Cherie?

message 607: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments I am not Cherie but I did read the Garden of Evening mists. I actually liked it better the The Gift of Rain. I thought the main char was so well written. I really felt her story.

message 608: by siriusedward (new)

siriusedward (elenaraphael) | 887 comments I am glad to hear that Renee.I want to read that too.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments siriusedward wrote: "Did you like it Cherie?"

I gave both books 5 stars, but I liked each of them for different reasons. I liked The Garden of Evening Mists because of the characters and their stories. However, in The Gift of Rain, it is the story and the information about Penang and what happened there that was so captivating to me. Neither are books to be rushed through, but savored and digested slowly. There are times you really have to put the book down and chew over the words to get all of the flavor.

I love how you describe that, Cherie. You should write a book yourself!

Eliestal | 255 comments I was supposed to read The Desert Spear back in December last year but I had to quit the buddy read due to certain circumstances. I had not had the time to pick it back up until now so this is fun.

Plus, Peter V. Brett just announced a new cycle for this series so this is great since I love this series so far (about 30% in the second book), even though I am less than halfway through.

message 612: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Glad you found time to pick it up again Clément. I missed you in the buddy read of the third book! Hope you can join us in that one or future books, we want to read the final two this year too.

message 613: by Eliestal (last edited Apr 13, 2018 12:32PM) (new)

Eliestal | 255 comments My goal/challenge is to finish this one and the next by the end of next month but it will not be an easy task seeing the number of pages... My previsions are about 2 weeks for The Desert Spear and 3 for The Daylight War. If they are as accurate as weather previsions, they will change by tomorrow :p

I hope I will be in time for the last two buddy read!

message 614: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Haha! They are quite fast reads considering the number of pages.

Also, don't hesitate to post in The Desert Spear thread if you feel like it. I'm not sure how much I still remember of the book, but generally people are still happy to discuss :)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I finished Call the Midwife today. I will likely start The Boy on the Bridge tomorrow. It will fill a task for the zodiac challenge.

This is a character trait that I am familiar with but not in books. I wonder how it will turn out. I added it to my list thanks to you!

message 618: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Kristie - re Baby Teeth. I can't even make myself click on the book link to find out what the story summary says, after your comment.

I'm giving up on What Dreams May Come too.
I can't do creepy horror and it seems I can't do creepy Heaven either.

You've spured my interest in both titles Kristie and Cherie!

message 622: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I finished yesterday The Woman in the Window and gave it a solid 3 stars.

I will start this afternoon The Good People. I am a little scared to be honest. I loved Burial Rites and my expectations are high on this one.

message 623: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments I was hoping TWITW would at least merit a 4! Ah well, I have to read it for live book club anyway so we shall see.

I hope you enjoy The Good People. I liked it a little better thàn Burial Rites but that was probable because of the more familiar setting.

Kristie | 19139 comments Cherie wrote: "Kristie - re Baby Teeth. I can't even make myself click on the book link to find out what the story summary says, after your comment."

lol, Cherie. It's one of those creepy kid stories where the little girl wants daddy all to herself and daddy thinks she's a little angel.

Sorry you're giving up on What Dreams May Come. I haven't read the book and I didn't remember the movie being creepy except for one part towards the end.

It is a good book in general, Margo. Considering it is a debut novel, I would give the author another try in the future. AND it happen to be set in November for around 80% of the book, so it fits a ZZ task. ;)

I read [book:The Good People|29248613] last month. Like you, Sandra, I was a bit worried as I adored Burial Rites but I really enjoyed it. I preferred Burial Rites but The Good People was a very good read. It certainly didn't suffer from the dreaded "second novel syndrome" imo.

message 627: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments I was a solid 3 on The Woman in the Window as well, Sandra. I was really thrilled to find out that so much was set in November and it could be used for the zodiac challenge! Bonus!

Ooh, I like that final bit! Even if it's not great I can use it for zz - and november is a troublesome month ;-p

message 631: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I finished The Anatomist last night. I would recommend it to insomniacs. It was a bit of a snoozefest. (view spoiler)

I'm not sure what to start next. I should go downstairs and see if I can find my paperback, Mystery. It is on my list of books to read in April. It was in Feb & March too.

message 632: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments I thought I might want to read that one Janice, til I saw your review!

I just finished Stay with Me and I really liked it. It was an interesting glimpse into the life of a woman in contemporary Nigeria. I was sucked into it from the start.

message 633: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I changed my mind. I'm going to start The Dwarves tonight. It's highly recommended by my grandson, so high he lent me his copy. I should get it back to him relatively soon.

I didn't start my audiobook today. A friend and a bottle of wine had priority.

message 634: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments I am in a major reading slump which is totally unlike me. I' ve tried all of the book I had planned to read this month and I find that they're not holding my interest. The fault is all me - I don't blame the book lol I am flitting from title to title - my plan is out the window 😕

This does not bode well for my planned buddy read The Left Hand of Darkness on 20th!

I settled on a book that I hope I can stick with - at least til I go to sleep in about an hour. Surely that's not to much of a relationship with a book 😵 It is All Our Wrong Todays

Maybe try some rereads.. ir some youtube booktuber videos or read a lot of reviews or maybe try some books about books like How Reading Changed My Life.

message 637: by siriusedward (new)

siriusedward (elenaraphael) | 887 comments Reading Twenty Years After which is as awesome as The Three Musketeers.

And Coming Up for Air by George Orwell which is sarcastic and a bit comic rendition of 1930s with some nostalgia( with a bit of mild mockery of the narrator's childhood sprinkled in as prewar,WW1 ,period) sprinkled in..

And also , Silas Marner by George Eliot where she displays her trademark gorgeous writing just maybe not as layered as Middlemarch.

He and I have similar tastes in books and it's always a topic of conversation. I'm thrilled that he is such an avid reader.

message 639: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I'm in a bit of a reading slump too. The abundance of snow still on the ground has everyone in a slump. The temps are now above freezing so things are looking up.

I had indicated on Saturday, that I was going to start listening to The Boy on the Bridge. I started today.

I started The Dwarves the other night, but yesterday my library ebook loan for One Fell Sweep was ready for download. So, I've started it too.

Yesterday, I went to the library to renew my membership and borrowed The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse for next month's themed read.

To add to the brouhaha, my real life book club is discussing Reason for Hope: A Spiritual Journey on May 14th and the race is on for who gets the books from the library. Lesley accidentally downloaded the audiobook instead of the ebook, Lynn had wanted the audiobook, Barb snatched the copy from the library that I was going to pick up yesterday, so I thumbed my nose at them all and downloaded the ebook.

Is there any hope I'll get them all read in time? Sigh!

message 640: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments @Margo - I'm in a reading slump too. I seem to be able to focus on the online courses (which are basically ebooks) that I'm doing at the moment but my actual fiction book I am only reading on the train when I go in to work and that's only a 10-15 minute journey. I'm hoping that when I finish this book, I can move on to a shorter and easier book to read and things might change.

message 641: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments Sarah, that's understandable when your studying. Plus Altered Carbon is not the easiest book in the world to follow - I gave up on it as I didn't like the style. (Is it a reread for you? I can't remember.)

All Our Wrong Todays didn't even make it til bed time last night! Great start but quickly degenerated from there. I might go a bit further at some time but not right now.

Started a series that Cherie loved - Frieda Klein. Blue Monday seems to be working for me so far plus I can fit it to one of my zz tasks. Only time will tell!!

message 642: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments After all the hype and media and blah blah blah I actually picked up and read on it's release date A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership. I have no idea what all the fuss is about. Trump and Hillary can't be but the last 50 pages. There's not really anything new in there. Really the book could have ended at Hillary. It was a book on morals and eithics and leadership. There were some very good quotes in there on leadership. Honestly the book is so tame I think it's funny how the media and Trump tweets will be what makes this book a best seller. It would never have gotten there on its own. But I did enjoy it

message 643: by Pragya (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4026 comments Ah, it seems like a lot of us are together in our reading slump. For me, it's perhaps because I can't find something as good as The Mayor of Casterbridge which I recently finished.

I just finished reading two books I was nearing the end of - Shanghai Girls and Sunbathing In The Rain: A Cheerful Book About Depression.

Can't get into I'll Give You the Sun or Awakenings.

Giving Dying Well: Our Journey of Love and Loss a try. Also, reading Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman.

Wish you get out of your reading slump soon, Margo, Janice and Sarah.

message 644: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments Thanks Pragya. I actually laughed out loud at some silly comment in One Fell Sweep, so things might be looking up.

We're a funny bunch. You don't hear TV watchers or movie buffs lament if they haven't watched anything in a while. But a reading slump to a bibliophile is monumental.

message 645: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Now I've moved on to Scourged I've got to admit I'm terribly glad this is the final book. Seriously just keep series to about 5 books 7 Max and we'll get along much better

Sounds like one of those reality tv shows about book clubs, lol! Best of luck with all your reading.

message 647: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Thanks Pragya. I think the slump will go once I'm passed my current book. Going to read a new Scalzi as that's bound to help me out.

message 648: by [deleted user] (last edited Apr 19, 2018 08:28AM) (new)

For everyone in a book slump, I go through that sometimes too. It seems a lot of readers do. Although it may not go over well for advice, I find not reading anything for a while and focusing on another activity helps. (Binge watch a tv series, garden, knit, plan for some nature walks.) Eventually the desire to read returns and finding an appealing book becomes much easier.

Hoping everyone gets over their reading slumps soon!

Anything more than 3 is pushing it in my opinion! All the greats come in 3 parts ;-)
