Gesa | 2 comments Dear Emma / OSS team,

please don't ever consider not continuing this wonderful book club. It has united so many booklovers and feminists and has truly been an inspiration. The effect it has in different parts of the world cannot be measured but I for one have learned so much and feel really empowered by this community and by the books we read. Keep going! X

message 52: by Dawn (new)

Dawn Excited to read, but legitimately surprised my library doesn't have it. New York Public Library ( Manhattan , Bronx and Staten Island of NYC) has only one copy which is to be used in library only! Hopefully NYC shared shelf readers can donate their copies. I'm going to request the library buys more copies through their site as well.

The Joana Edit || JR | 7 comments Going to read it. Not straight away but I will.... and I’ll post my opinion here later!

Megan Flockhart | 4 comments I can't agree more with everything said, this post is so honest and raw, I couldn't be more thankful to belong to such an educating and empowering community. Im currently writing my dissertation regarding gender within advertisements and even through that I'm learning so much about the many types of feminism and realising so much about my privilege as a white woman. So I really can't wait to educate myself further and read this book, as I feel like the more I learn the more liberated I am in standing up for others.

Dagny Moland Seim | 48 comments What a great pick, can't wait to read it! The Power is sitting on my bed side table waiting for me, just have to finish the three books I am currently reading :)

On the subject of this month's book I have to mention "Exterminate all the brutes" by Sven Lindqvist. I read this book on the recommendation of Gloria Steinem (http://onegrandbooks.com/shop/curator...). A harrowing, eye-opening book that will stay with me forever.

message 57: by Dana (new)

Dana Stabenow (danastabenow) Thank you for your recommendations. I haven't read them all but those I have have altered my perspective in useful ways. This one will, too.

Denise | 4 comments I’m looking forward to reading this book! I took a college course recently that really made me think and examine race and white privilege. In looking for more information, I came across this book and requested it from the library. Hopefully I will get it soon!

Oh fabulous, this is a book I've been meaning to read but haven't yet - now I have an excuse to buy it! :-)

message 62: by Abi (new)

Abi | 17 comments Thank you Emma for continuing this incredibly important book club. Joining it when you first formed the group has changed my perspective on life in many different ways (and I know will continue to do so). I had a difficult time last year learning I was not going to be able to have children and so this has impacted some of the reading; a few titles I’ve had to put on my ‘to read’ shelf when I’m feeling a bit stronger. However, being a member of this group gave me confidence to seek out female writers on the subject of womanhood and motherhood, which has been invaluable in preparing me for my hysterectomy. I’m looking forward to starting our new book for 2018 and wish all members a happy new year. Abi x

Shana | 11 comments thanks for a choice sure to make each of us think, find insight, cause for disagreement, dismay, delight and potentially for changing ourselves and possibly even our community. looking forward to it. Still hoping to find an irl Meetup to discuss these books, but the online discussions are truly global and interesting. Happy 2018, glad to walk/read with you!

message 77: by Deila (last edited Jan 02, 2018 01:29PM) (new)

Deila | 2 comments I look forward not only to reading this, but hopefully to participating in some discussions on the content as the rest of the shared shelf engages with it. As part of the great american melting pot, hailing from at least 8 known ethic backgrounds of nearly equal proportions, how others react to/approach/acknowledge/dispute or otherwise behave around the topic of race is fascinating to me.

message 78: by Kris (new)

Kris | 1 comments Excited to read this book and discuss it. I’m new to the group, but it’s obvious that everyone in OSS has worked to create an amazing, open, and supportive community!

message 79: by Kytriya (new)

Kytriya Luebeck | 49 comments Emma wrote: "Dear OSS,

There is so much racism, both in our past and present, that is not acknowledged and accounted for. I know this to be the case from my own education, and I know there is so much more for..."

I can not wait to read this book! I have always been curious about Racism in the UK. The vote to leave the EU was considered a racist move. I thought of it as a safety for Jews move only because in my Bible (both the Tanakh and the Holy Bible) say that in the last days, all nations will come against Israel and try to exterminate the Jews. Thus I see some not being unified, as a good thing, but still think we all need to be unified against Racism and for Peace.

message 85: by B (new)

B | 1 comments Emma- thank you for encouraging the “interrogation of self” and the acknowledgement of the necessary (but worthwhile) difficulty that goes along with it. I hope this inspires more people to engage in these valuable, essential behaviors that not only serve for the betterment of the self but for the community, the collective, our world. Our society provides such easily accessible distraction and promotes the avoidance of challenge making the undertaking that much more difficult— but with people like you encouraging others to just give it a try and assuring they’ll be better for it, there is hope!

You’re an inspiration. Keep up all your wonderful work!

message 86: by Nataly (new)

Nataly Rodriguez (nathfray) | 4 comments Happy new year, Emma! <3

message 87: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte | 3 comments This bookclub has made me want to read again. To read about topics that I'd be afraid to tackle all by myself.
Thanks so much for the inspiration, the lessons àd the laughs as well. I just finished the Power and am ready for all the other books I have yet to read.

Thank you Emma and thank you people of our shared shelf ❤

message 92: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn Thank you for this selection. It looked like something I wanted to read, and felt I should, but knowing this group is about to take it on (thanks Emma!) makes me feel even more so.

Happy New Year to all - great way to start it.

message 93: by Yelena (new)

Yelena Chzhen | 1 comments Going to order it now. It is scary how the issue of racism is gaining more and more space in the world currently. Sometimes I cannot believe what I’m hearing and reading, and people justifying it as ‘identitism’. There is no such thing! If you categorise people by their ethnically background, and discriminate them, you are racist.
