I'll be switching between hard cover, paperback, kindle, and audiobook depending on where I am and what I am doing :) Editions...whatever I own, mostly the original US editions.
Alex wrote: "THOSE ARE BEAUTIFUL."I had to own them. My boyfriend gave ma $100 amazon gift card for Christmas so I snagged them then.
I've got my old beat up Dutch paperbacks lying around. I'm not sure at the moment if I'm gonna reread them along with you guys, I reread them earlier this year. I will drop in on discussions though!Maybe I'll look into audiobooks, are there lots of different versions and if so could someone make a suggestion?
It might be fun to look at how some of the words translate into a different language. Are there more folks who are familiar with other translations?

I started reading them in Latin American Spanish (I read them as they came out and I was pretty young back then so buying them online in English was out of the question) then thankfully moved to England and was able to read the British versions, then finished the series with the American versions when I went back home (thanks to being older and the internet being a LOT better at international buying/shipping)
The Latin American Spanish versions were horrible. I've spoken with several friends about this and they all agree the translation was terrible. No idea if this is the case with other translations. (Will check!)
For what I remember, the American and British versions are pretty much the same. They change words to suit the language differences like calling football soccer and biscuits cookies, and stuff like that, but there are no major changes except the first book's title.
Now that you point it out, I have no editions to read :/ My hodgepodge of versions is back at home in a box. I guess I'll buy the ebooks.
As for the audiobooks, maybe the Stephen Fry versions? I have no idea if they're better or not (have never listened to the audiobooks) I just love Stephen Fry. :)
Here's a sample of both versions, maybe that'll help you pick

I managed to get my hands on the UK audiobooks, so I'll be trying those out this time to see how Stephen Fry compares to Jim Dale.
Thanks Alexa! I've listened to both narrators and they're both quite all right. I think I prefer Jim Dale's Voldemort over Fry's. Still, I got more than a month to decide so we'll see.
If i do the re-read, i think i will do the Stephen Fry audiobooks. Never finished the series (read the first 4 books and partly read the fifth).
I'm on the fence about versions. I have the print hardcover editions as well as the US audio editions. I would kind of like to get the UK audio editions at least for the first one to see how I like Fry as a narrator, but it is so expensive to get it...and then is have to turn on my old computer to convert it to mp3 since my current computer doesn't have a disc drive...in short, still TBD :)
As it turns out a friend of mine has the Jim Dale audiobooks and I can borrow them. So I'll be embarking on an audio adventure :) Audiobooks are relatively new for me so I'm excited!
These are great ones to start with. Or maybe not, because most others will disappoint by comparison. :-P
Hmm... I am mighty curious about this KU thing. Are you going to try it Alex? Can you let us know how good the title availability is? I'm also wondering since I love to re-read and I guess with this kind of program the book is never really yours, so you won't keep anything if you decide to stop paying. Still, 9.99 is pretty low, seems perfect to try the book and then buy it if you like it.

Edit: Look at you, Alex! You half a mod... :-)
